Can an engine be repaired after overheating?
If the crankshaft and cylinder head walls are destroyed, repair is not practical. In case of minor damage, elements of the cylinder-piston group have to be replaced. To prevent another overheating incident, it is necessary to fix malfunctions of the engine cooling system.
Engine restoration or replacement: which is better?
The cost of engine restoration and replacement is often the same. Engine repair is a labour- and time-consuming job. It is only advisable when individual parts are damaged. Specialists will check the entire assembly and eliminate the detected faults. Replacement of the engine assembly is carried out in case of failure of most of its parts. This procedure does not take much time. However, for vintage cars, new engines are not available. In this case, installing a used engine comes with the risk of a shorter operational life.
Is engine repair possible after water hammer damage?
Water hammer is a predssure surge that results in deformation of connecting rods and the crankshaft, and disruption of the piston stroke. The engine has to be overhauled by having the damaged parts replaced at a garage. Technicians will also check the valvetrain and, if necessary, install new components. If the cylinder head is destroyed, installation of a new power unit assembly may be required.
