How to repair Toyota yourself: common malfunctions

It is generally believed that Toyota cars almost never break down and won’t let you down even in severe road situations. Actually, repairs can long be avoided if you follow the recommendations on use of these cars and perform their maintenance in due time. It is better to eliminate faults instantly after you have noticed their first signs. Especially taking into account that you can cope with many of them yourself. Tips from AUTODOC Club and step-by-step video tutorials on Toyota repair will help you with this.

Engine

The engines in some models, for instance Toyota Corolla, start to consume much oil over time. That is why it is important to check its level as often as possible and top it up as necessary. But when oil consumption severely increases, cleaning the engine from carbon deposits will be necessary. For doing this, different methods can be used. In some cases the problem can only be solved by replacing the piston rings and valve oil seals. You will find a lot of helpful information on how to take care of the engines of this make in the Toyota repair and servicing  manual provided by AUTODOC Club.

Another typical problem is unstable engine idling. The cause is carbon build up on the throttle valve or breakdown of the idle air control valve. Following our video guide you can easily replace the control valve with a new one. The valve cover gasket also needs to be checked regularly: it loses elasticity in course of time and can no longer provide tightness between the contacting surfaces.

If you noticed that the engine vibrates too much, check its mounts: they are likely to have been destroyed. However, sometimes excessive vibrations may be caused by a clogged fuel filter. To replace it easily and quickly, download Toyota step-by-step repair and maintenance guide for free.

Suspension

Over time, knocks in the rear suspension may be heard in the Toyota RAV4 cars. Their cause is poorly engineered control arm bushes. It is recommended to install the solid components instead of the standard split-type ones. For doing this, use our illustrated PDF Toyota repair guide. In addition, the bushes of the front stabilizer may break down prematurely. The problem manifests itself by screeching and can be eliminated by replacement of the elastic elements.

Brake system

Brake calipers are its vulnerable elements. It is recommended to lubricate their guide pins every 10,000 kilometers to make them serve long. Otherwise the parts may get jammed, which is fraught with rapid wear of the brake pads and loss of braking efficiency.
