DIY Ford repair: common malfunctions

Ford cars are durable, easy to operate and maintain. Many assemblies and units have rather simple construction, so you can fix them yourself. We will tell you about DIY Ford repair and maintenance so that you can easily replace consumables or eliminate minor problems at home.

Engine

Power units installed on Ford cars are quite reliable. However, you should carefully follow recommendations on their maintenance. For instance, owners of Ford Focus cars with 1.6, 1.8 and 2.0 litres engine capacity should maintain the oil level in the safe range, check air filters as often as possible and immediately replace them if they are dirty. An illustrated PDF Ford repair manual will help with that.

Another issue Ford owners may face is the idle air control valve breakdown, which comes with the reduced engine power. You will easily replace this component yourself following video guide instructions.

A weak spot of some Ford models is a fuel pump. It’s very sensitive to fuel quality. Regularly clean the fuel pump filter strainer to extend the service life of this component.

Ford Mondeo models suffer from oil leakage in the valve cover area. Replace the valve cover gasket to eliminate the problem.

Transmission

Ford Focus, Fiesta cars owners may experience difficulties with iB5 transmission, especially with its vulnerable part, such as a planetary gear shaft. We recommend replacing it with the reinforced one to avoid serious consequences. This work should be performed at a car repair shop.

The Ford Focus 3's manual transmission may leak due to the damaged output shaft seal. Download free step-by-step video tutorial on Ford repair from AUTODOC Club to properly install a new sealing element.

Steering control

You may have problems with electric power steering as well. This is manifested by the excessive force required to rotate the steering wheel when driving at high speed. This happens due to the power steering motor failure. The motor is replaced together with the steering rack.

Suspension

You may hear a squeaking noise near the anti-roll bar links in some models. As a rule, it happens because of the damaged bushings. Follow a Ford repair and operation manual step by step, and you will be able to replace these parts without assistance.

Lighting

Owners of Ford cars often face headlight misting. The problem can be easily eliminated: just replace the seal caps in the rear part of the lamp.
