How to change an ignition coil [AUTODOC TUTORIAL]


a new ignition coil
a set of suitable tools
torque wrench
crow bar
threadlocker
electrical contact cleaner spray
The need for replacement is indicated by the following signs:
- difficulty starting the engine
- the engine running rough
- engine power loss
- 1.
Shut down the engine, switch off the ignition and wait until the engine has cooled down completely - 2.
If necessary, remove the engine coverThe main types of ignition coils:Coil pack or single coil. This supplies high voltage current to the spark plugs of all cylinders or to the distributorPencil coils. Each of these is responsible for the operation of a particular cylinder's spark plug - 3.
The coil pack is located on top of the engine - 4.
The high voltage wires run from it to the spark plugs - 5.
The component is usually located near the spark plugs - 6.
Pry up and unclip the caps of the high voltage cables - 7.
Draw the wires to different sides to prevent mixing them up when reinstalling - 8.
To indicate the installation order of the high voltage wires, make marks on their capsBe careful!Incorrect connection of the wires causes the engine to malfunction or not start at all - 9.
On some ignition coils, the terminals are factory-numbered to make installation easy - 10.
Carefully examine the ignition coil connection specifics, design, and fasteners - 11.
If there is a lock on the electrical connector, unclip it - 12.
Unscrew the fasteners and remove the part - 13.
Check the high voltage wires for damage and corrosion of the connectors - 14.
Install a new ignition coil in the mounting seat - 15.
Tighten the fasteners with a torque wrench to the manufacturer's recommended torqueAUTODOC recommends:If necessary, clean and treat the ignition coil connector - 16.
Attach the electrical connector of the ignition coil - 17.
Connect the high voltage wires in the correct order - 18.
Check that the installation is correct and then carry out a test engine start - 19.
Remember to check that the spark plugs are in good condition and replace them if necessaryAUTODOC recommends:Pencil coils are installed directly into the spark plug wellsThere is no need to change all the components; only the defective one needs to be replaced
