How to change glow plugs on a car – replacement tutorial

Things you may need:

                      a set of suitable tools
                    
                      a set of new glow plugs
                    
                      torque wrench
                    
                      a glow plug socket
                    
                      high temperature grease
                    
                      all-purpose cleaning spray
                    
                      WD-40 spray

Please note!

Glow plugs are heating elements used to aid in starting a diesel engine
Their number corresponds to the number of engine cylinders
The glow plugs all have the same service life and should be replaced as a set
Glow plugs are located in the cylinder head
Depending on the vehicle design, they can be fitted at the front, rear or on top of the engine

Before getting down to work, make sure that the engine has cooled down

Open the bonnet and remove the engine cover
3.

Locate the glow plugs
4.

Look at the design of the glow plugs and their electrical contacts

Important!
Before getting down to work, check that no power is being supplied to the glow plugsMake sure the ignition is offIn some cases you may need to disconnect the negative battery terminal

Remove the common power supply terminal, if your car has one

Or detach the connectors from all glow plugs

Clean the working area

To unscrew the glow plugs, use a torque wrench with a suitable socket

Set the wrench to the torque value recommended by the car manufacturer. This value may be specified on the package or in the car repair manual

Caution!
To avoid breaking the glow plug, do not exceed the prescribed torque

Before removing the glow plugs, clean the working area again

If the glow plugs are difficult to access, use a magnetic pickup tool with a flexible shaft

If the preset torque is insufficient to unscrew the glow plugs, you can try the following: Remove the parts after warming up the engine to the operating temperature

Proceed with caution to prevent burns

Use WD-40 spray

If the plugs are mounted at an angle, wrap them in cloths to keep them exposed to the agent

Please note!
Do not touch the heating portion of new glow plugs

Treat the portion of the body from the beginning of the thread to the base with high-temperature grease. This will prevent the spread of corrosion

Carefully install the new glow plugs, avoiding touching the walls of their wells

Tighten the parts to the torque recommended by the car manufacturer

Check the condition of the connectors and replace them if necessary

Tighten the fasteners of the common terminal to the torque recommended by the car manufacturer
