How to change rear brake cylinder FIAT PUNTO TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Wheel Cylinder for PUNTO (188) and other FIAT models
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Replace the wheel brake cylinders of the rear drum brakes in pairs.
The replacement procedure is identical for the right and left wheel brake cylinders of the rear drum brakes.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. Take the following steps:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6.1
Unscrew the brake drum fastening.
Step 6.2
Use a drive socket #12.
Step 6.3
Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 7
Remove the brake drum.
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. AUTODOC recommends:
Examine the brake drum. Replace it if necessary.
Step 8
Disconnect the hydraulic line from the wheel cylinder back. Use a flare nut spanner #11.
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. Professionals recommend:
Immediately plug the brake line open end to prevent fluid leakage and ingress of dirt into the hydraulic system.
Step 9
Unscrew the brake cylinder fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10.1
Remove the brake cylinder from the backplate.
Step 10.2
Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 11
Clean the brake drum. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Clean the brake pipe attachment spot and the brake drum fastening bolts on Fiat Punto 188.
Step 13.1
Install a new brake cylinder.
Step 13.2
Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 14
Screw the brake cylinder fastening bolts. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Connect the hydraulic line to the wheel cylinder back. Use a flare nut spanner #11.
Step 16
Bleed the brake cylinder system. Use a combination spanner #8.
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. Tip:
Make sure to set the protection cap on the bleeder valve.
Step 17
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 18
Install the brake drum and fasten it.
Step 19
Tigten the brake drum fasteners. Use a drive socket #12. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 15 Nm torque.
Step 20
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 21
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Fiat Punto 188
Step 22
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 23
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 98 nm torque.
Step 24
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Replacement: wheel cylinder – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Bleed the brake system after replacing the cylinder on Fiat Punto 188.Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and refill if necessary.Perform test braking when driving at an average speed, the Fiat Punto 188 should not pull to one side.
