How to change rear brake drum and brake pads FIAT PUNTO TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Brake Shoes for PUNTO (188) and other FIAT models
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. Professionals recommend:
Replace brake shoes as a set on an axle. This will ensure efficient braking.
The replacement procedure is identical for brake shoes on the same axle.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Open the bonnet. Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 2
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 3
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 4
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 5
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. AUTODOC recommends:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 6
Remove the wheel.
Step 7
Fully lower the parking brake lever.
Step 8
Unscrew the brake drum fastening. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9
Remove the brake drum.
AUTODOC recommends:
Examine the brake drum. Replace it if necessary.
Step 10
Remove the hub bearing protection cap. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. Tip:
Some cars are not equipped with wheel hub caps.
Step 11
Unscrew the wheel hub axle nut. Use a drive socket #32. Use a tap wrench.
Step 12
Remove the hub and the bearing together, since they are a sealed unit.
Step 13
Remove the hold-down spring.
Step 14.1
Remove the brake shoe hold-down cup.
Step 14.2
Use pliers.
Step 15
Pull both brake shoes with the adjuster from the working brake cylinder, avoiding damage to the boots. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 16
Remove both shoes from the mounting bracket.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC:
Don't press the brake pedal after removing the rear brake drum shoes. This will cause the piston to fall out of the brake cylinder, leakage of brake fluid and depressurization of the system.
Step 17
Disconnect the parking brake cable.
Step 18
Clean the brake drum. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 19
Perform further demounting of the upper retaining spring and the adjuster mechanism.
Step 20
Install the upper retaining springs and adjustment mechanism on new brake shoes.
Step 21
Connect the parking brake cable to the parking brake lever.
Step 22
Install the brake shoes on the working brake cylinder on the bracket and on the brake-support plate bracket.
Step 23
Reinstall the brake shoe hold-down cup.
Step 24
Install the hold-down spring.
Step 25
Install the wheel hub.
Step 26
Tighten the hub. Use a drive socket #32. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 280 nm torque.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
The wheel bearing unit must not tilt on the axle pin.
Step 27
Install the hub bearing protection cap. Use a hammer.
Step 28
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush.
Step 29
Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 30
Install the brake drum and fasten it.
Step 31
Tigten the brake drum fasteners. Use a drive socket #12. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 15 Nm torque.
Step 32
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the surface where the wheel rim contacts the brake drum. Use copper grease.
Step 33
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. Fiat Punto 188
Step 34
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 35
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 98 nm torque.
Step 36
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. AUTODOC recommends:
Check the brake fluid level in the expansion tank and refill if necessary.
Step 37
Tighten the brake fluid reservoir cap. Close the hood.
Replacement: brake shoes – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Slow down gently for the first 150–200 km after replacing the brake shoes. Avoid excessive and abrupt braking during that time.
