Repairing and servicing Fiat Punto yourself

Engine

  • The 1.2 and 1.4 petrol engines have a timing belt with a short service life. Moreover, due to the absence of hydraulic tappets the expansion gap of their valves has to be adjusted with the help of special nuts.
  • The working lifespan of the 1.3 diesel engine timing chain is below 100,000 kilometres. It should be replaced at a garage, however, you can install many components, such as the glow plugs, yourself. For doing this, use our illustrated PDF manual on Fiat Punto repair.
  • Often, accessories break down: the housing of the alternator gets cracked, its brushes – worn out, its winding – broken. If whistling is heard from the device and the battery is not charging – contact an automotive electrician. If repair of the alternator is possible, he will do it properly. As for replacing the whole component, you can install the new one at home.
  • The throttle actuator gear often gets broken, which leads to fuel consumption increase and unstable engine operation. To prevent this, you have to clean the throttle regularly. You can replace it with the new one according to Fiat Punto repair step-by-step video tutorial.

Transmission

  • Oil leakage may occur in manual transmissions of the III (199) cars. This is caused by worn out oil seals and gaskets. Replace the transmission fluid and the seals in due time.
  • The gaskets of the Selespeed semi-automatic transmission cannot withstand severe cold. In the cold months, it’s advisable to store the car in a heated garage, and warm up the engine to its working temperature before starting off.

Running gear

  • Elements of the suspension of the II (188) cars such as the front control arms and shock absorbers are non-durable. If you hear knocking while driving, you need to replace the components. Download our video guide to do Fiat Punto repair and servicing yourself.

Body

  • The paintwork in the area of the wheel arches and door sills cracks over a short time. Our tip: do not apply excessive force when washing the car, and glue over the vulnerable areas with stone chip protection film.
  • The windshield gets covered with scratches. Replace worn out windshield wiper blades in good time. To do this, you can download our step-by-step tutorials on Fiat Punto repair and maintenance for free.
  • The housings of the rear lights and the headlights are also prone to scratching. Do not wipe them with dry cloth and do not use abrasive cleaning products. In case of severe damage, install the new parts.
