The replacement procedure is the same for all spark plugs.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: spark plugs – Toyota Prius 2. Take the following steps:
Step 1
Open the bonnet.
Step 2
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3
Unscrew the fasteners of the windscreen wiper arms. Use a drive socket #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 4
Remove the wiper arms.
Step 5
Remove the wiper arm covers. Use a clip removal tool.
Step 6
Treat the fasteners of the windscreen wiper linkage. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Detach the windscreen wiper connector.
Step 8
Unscrew the fasteners of the windscreen wiper linkage panel. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9
Unscrew the fasteners of the fuse box. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10
Remove the panel assembled with the windscreen wiper linkage.
Step 11
Clean the ignition coils.
Step 12
Unscrew the fasteners of the ignition coils. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Take out the ignition coils from the spark plug wells.

Remember the sequence of steps for ignition coil demounting.
Step 14
Clean dirt, dust and debris from inside the spark plug wells.
Step 15
Unscrew the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 16
Take out the spark plugs.
Step 17
Apply a thin layer of a special high temperature anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new spark plugs.
Step 18
Install the new spark plugs into their mounting seats. Use the spark plug socket #16.
Step 19
Screw new spark plugs and tighten them. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 18 nm torque.
Replacement: spark plugs – Toyota Prius 2. Professionals recommend:
Don't tighten the plugs with excessive force. Exceeding tightening torque can damage the thread connection. Be careful when working with a spark plug wrench. Its skewing can cause damage to the threaded connection.
Step 20
Treat the ignition coil tips. Use high-temperature grease.
Step 21
Install the ignition coils to the spark plug wells. Make sure you hear a click indicating that it is locked in place.

Tighten the fasteners of the ignition coils. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 23
Install the panel assembled with the windscreen wiper linkage.
Step 24
Screw in the fasteners of the windscreen wiper linkage panel. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 25
Screw in the fasteners of the fuse box. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 26
Attach the windscreen wiper connector.
Step 27
Install the wiper arm covers.
Step 28
Reinstall the wiper arms.
Replacement: spark plugs – Toyota Prius 2. Tip:
Make sure not to mix up the wiper arms on the driver's and passenger's sides.
Step 29
Tighten the fasteners of the wiper arms. Use a drive socket #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 21 Nm torque.
Step 30
Run the engine for a few minutes. This is necessary in order to make sure that the component operates properly.
Step 31
Shut off the engine.
Step 32
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 33
Close the hood.
