DIY repair and maintenance of your Toyota Avensis

Engine

  • Connecting rod bearings tend to break down on the Avensis I (T22) and II (T25) after 100,000 km. This occurs due to ingress of foreign particles into the unit and insufficient lubrication. The defect leads to decreased oil pressure. Installation of new components should be performed by specialists. Our recommendation: check the oil level and replace it in due time. For this you can use our illustrated PDF manual on Toyota Avensis repair.
  • The water pump in Avensis III (T27) vehicles breaks down after 60,000 km because of bearing breakage or gasket tearing. If you hear unusual sounds from the pump side and the level of coolant in the coolant tank has gone down, you need to replace the part. Check the cooling system for leaks when carrying out DIY repair and maintenance on the Toyota Avensis. Before visiting a garage to have a new pump installed you can inspect the timing belt and its pulleys for wear yourself. Often these elements are replaced together with the pump.

Transmission

  • The main and secondary shaft bearings wear out on cars equipped with a manual gearbox after 100,000 km of driving. A sign of malfunction is humming coming from the unit. To prevent jamming of the mechanism, visit a garage to have the parts replaced. You can service the gearbox yourself by changing the oil. Follow our step-by-step video tutorial on Toyota Avensis repair.
  • The clutch release bearing of Toyota III (T27) cars tends to break down. The main sign of a defect is noise when you release the clutch pedal. Do not postpone replacement of this component.

Suspension

  • Stabilizer links and bushes fail prematurely. If the car rolls when turning and braking and you can hear knocking sounds from the suspension, you need to install new parts. You can handle this job yourself once you’ve downloaded our video guide for free.
  • The bushes of the rear arms on Avensis II (T25) cars break down prematurely. Replace the elements if you can hear unusual sounds when driving on poor-quality roads. Follow our Toyota Avensis repair and maintenance manual step by step.

Steering

  • The steering rack sleeves of cars equipped with electric power steering do not typically have a long working lifespan. If you notice rattling and wobbling when you turn the steering wheel, these components need to be replaced at a garage.
  • The spline joint in the steering rack can wear out. The defect can be detected by knocking sounds near the unit. It is better to entrust the installation of a new rack to specialists.
