How to change rear suspension arm on TOYOTA LAND CRUISER PRADO 3 (J120) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Control Arm for LAND CRUISER (KDJ12_, GRJ12_) and other TOYOTA models
Replacement: rear suspension lower trailing arm – Toyota Prado J120. AUTODOC recommends:
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: rear suspension lower trailing arm – Toyota Prado J120. Take the following steps:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: rear suspension lower trailing arm – Toyota Prado J120. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the arm fastening to the beam. Use a drive socket #19. Use a tap wrench.
Step 8
Unscrew the fastener connecting the trailing arm to the car body. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a tap wrench.
Step 9
Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 10
Clean the parking brake bracket. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 11
Unscrew the bolt and remove the parking brake cable bracket from the trailing arm. Use a drive socket #12.
Step 12
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 13
Remove the arm.
Step 14
Install a new arm.
Replacement: rear suspension lower trailing arm – Toyota Prado J120. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 15
Install the control arm fasteners. Use a crowbar.
Step 16
Tighten the fastener connecting the trailing arm to the car body. Screw in the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear subframe.
Use a combination spanner #19.
Step 17
Remove the mounting from under the rear axle beam.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: rear suspension lower trailing arm – Toyota Prado J120. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 18
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 19
Tighten the arm fastening to the beam. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 130 Nm torque.
Step 20
Tighten the fastener connecting the control arm to the car body. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 130 Nm torque.
Step 21
Install the bracket attaching the parking brake cable to the trailing arm. Use a drive socket #12.
Step 22
Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease. Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Toyota Prado J120 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 23
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 24
Install the wheel.
Replacement: rear suspension lower trailing arm – Toyota Prado J120. AUTODOC experts recommend:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 25
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 26
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 112 nm torque.
Step 27
Remove the jacks and chocks.
