                      Wire brush

The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: rear suspension lower control arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Use the following procedure:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 3

Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

Replacement: rear suspension lower control arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7

Unscrew the arm fastening to the beam. Use a combination spanner #17 (2 pieces).
Step 8

Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar.
Step 9

Support the stub axle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 10

Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 11

Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #17. Use a combination spanner #17.
Step 12

Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 13

Detach the lower part of the shock absorber.
Step 14

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 15

Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #17.
Step 16

Remove the fastening nut.
Step 17

Remove the arm. Use a ball joint puller.

Replacement: rear suspension lower control arm – Toyota RAV4 III. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Adjust the length of the free portion of the thread on the new suspension arm. The length should be the same as on the old suspension arm. This will prevent wheel misalignment.
Step 18

Tighten the lock nut of the suspension arm. Use a combination spanner #27. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 nm torque.
Step 19

Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20

Install a new arm.

Replacement: rear suspension lower control arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Tip from AUTODOC:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 21

Install the fastening nut.
Step 22

Tighten the fastener connecting the suspension arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 nm torque.
Step 23

Attach the lower part of the shock absorber.
Step 24

Install the fastening bolt.
Step 25

Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 80 nm torque. Use a crowbar.
Step 26

Install the fastening bolt.

Step 27

Tighten the arm fastening to the beam. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 nm torque.
Step 28

Remove the support from under the stub axle.

AUTODOC recommends:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 29

Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 30

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 31

Clean the brake disk surface. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 32

Install the wheel.

Replacement: rear suspension lower control arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Professionals recommend:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 33

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 34

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 103 nm torque.
Step 35

Remove the jacks and chocks.
