Replacement: shock absorbers – FORD TRANSIT Bus. AUTODOC recommends:
Replace shock absorbers in pairs on an axle.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock absorbers of the rear suspension.
All the work should be carried out with the engine switched off.
Replacement: shock absorbers – FORD TRANSIT Bus. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
If you are going to use a jack, secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel nuts. Use a 21 mm wheel impact socket. Use a tommy bar.
Step 3
Raise the car.
Warning!
If you are using a jack, make sure the car is parked on a hard, flat surface.Make sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel nuts.
Caution!
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the nuts.
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Prop up the rear axle beam. If the car has been raised on a lift, use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 8
Unscrew the upper fastener of the shock absorber. Use a 21 mm combination spanner. Use an 18 mm socket. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9
Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use an 18 mm combination spanner. Use a 15 mm socket. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 11
Remove the shock absorber.
Step 12
Clean the shock absorber mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use an all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 13
Place the new shock absorber under the wheel arch.
AUTODOC recommendation:
Before installing a new shock absorber, you should prime it by pumping it 3–5 times by hand.
Step 14
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 15
To tighten the fasteners correctly, you have to jack up the suspension to load it. If the car has been raised on a lift, use a transmission jack.
Step 16
Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a 15 mm combination spanner. Use an 18 mm socket. Use a torque wrench. Tightening torque: 80 N·m.
Step 17
Tighten the top fastener of the shock absorber. Use an 18 mm combination spanner. Use a 21 mm socket. Use a torque wrench. Tightening torque: 180 N·m.
Step 18
Remove the support from under the axle beam.
Step 19
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use an all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 20
Treat the wheel hub surface that contacts the wheel rim. Use ceramic grease.
Step 21
Install the wheel.
Caution!
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing on the fastening nuts.
Step 22
Screw on the wheel nuts. Use a 21 mm wheel impact socket. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 23
Lower the car and tighten the wheel nuts in a criss-cross order. Use a 21 mm wheel impact socket. Use a torque wrench. Tightening torque: 200 N·m.
Step 24
Remove the jack and wheel chocks.
