Repairing and servicing Ford Focus yourself

Engine

  • Cold 1.6 engines of the DYB cars run irregularly. The same takes place when idling. Moreover, the engine power is reduced. The cause lies in a malfunctioning idle air control valve. This can be got rid of by reflashing the engine control unit. In some cases you need to replace the valve. Consult the step-by-step Ford Focus repair instruction and you will easily handle this job yourself.
  • The fuel injectors of the Duratec 2.0 petrol engine can get clogged as early as after 30,000 kilometres. The problem can be partially fixed with the help of ultrasonic cleaning at a garage. To extend the working lifespan of the injectors you need to make sure that you use high quality fuel and to replace the filter in due time. See how to do this in our step-by-step tutorial on Ford Focus repair.

Transmission

  • Over several years of operation, your automatic transmission may alarm you with jerks when you start off. This is especially noticeable when driving with frequent stops, for instance, in traffic jams. To eliminate this defect, the manufacturer updated the firmware for the control unit. With the necessary tools and our video guide you can reflash the unit at home.
  • Mechanical damage can occur to the manual transmission right-side oil seal, which isn’t fitted tightly enough, after 4,000–10,000 kilometres. In this case it is important to detect the failure in good time and ensure immediate Ford Focus repair and maintenance which you can do yourself.

Steering

  • On the DYB cars, the electric power steering system makes handling the car less comfortable at high speeds: the steering wheel requires more effort to turn. The problem may be temporarily fixed by shutting down the engine for a few minutes. To ensure proper operation of the system in future, you need to replace the electric motor of the EPS or, most likely, the whole steering rack assembly. Before starting the repair, see our illustrated manual on Ford Focus repair provided in PDF format. A faulty EPS may lead to impaired roadholding of the car. In this case you need to update the firmware. You can download detailed tips on this procedure for free.
  • The steering tie rods in pre-restyling DYB versions get worn out as early as after 3,000–7,000 kilometres due to an ill-designed shape of their boots and excessive stiffness of the latter. Moreover, there often occurs an excessive free play, which can only be eliminated by replacing the whole steering rack.
