Replacement: wheel bearing – FORD TRANSIT Bus. AUTODOC experts recommend:
- Do not re-use the bearing assembly you removed from your FORD TRANSIT Bus car.
- The wheel bearing replacement procedure is identical for both wheels on the same axle.
- All the work should be carried out with the ignition switched off.
Carry out the replacement steps as follows:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 2Remove the wheel centre cap.Step 3Loosen the wheel nuts. Use a 21 mm wheel impact socket. Use a tommy bar.
- Step 4Remove the cotter pin that secures the axle fastener. Use a mounting lever. Use long nose pliers.
- Step 5Remove the castle cover from the axle nut.
- Step 6Clean the axle nut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 7Loosen the axle nut. Use a 36 mm socket. Use a tommy bar.
- Step 8Raise the car.Replacement: wheel bearing – FORD TRANSIT Bus. Professionals recommend:If you are using a jack, make sure the car is parked on a hard, flat surface.Make sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.Step 9Unscrew the wheel nuts.Caution!To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the nuts.
- Step 10Remove the wheel.
- Step 11Unscrew the axle nut. Use a 36 mm socket. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 12Remove the axle washer. Use a telescoping magnetic pick-up tool.
- Step 13Jack up the suspension arm. Use a transmission jack or one more vehicle jack.
- Step 14Detach the CV axle from the steering knuckle. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
- Step 15Remove the support from under the suspension arm.Caution!Make sure that the CV axle is not hanging down.
- Step 16Spread the brake pads apart. Use a mounting lever.
- Step 17Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 18Unscrew the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use an 18 mm socket. Use a tommy bar.
- Step 19Remove the fastening bolts. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 20Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.Replacement: wheel bearing – FORD TRANSIT Bus. AUTODOC recommends:Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting it from the brake hose to avoid opening the brake line.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging from the brake hose.Do not press the brake pedal after the caliper has been removed. This may cause the piston to fall out of the caliper bore resulting in the brake fluid leakage and air entering the system.
- Step 21Unscrew the wheel bearing fasteners. Use a T50 Torx bit. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 22Remove the fastening bolts.Step 23Remove the wheel hub together with the brake disc.
- Step 24Clean the wheel bearing mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use an all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 25Clean the mounting seat of the brake caliper bracket. Use a wire brush. Use an all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 26Clean the splines of the CV joint. Use a wire brush. Use an all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 27Clean the brake disc fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 28Unscrew the brake disc fasteners. Use a 13 mm socket. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 29Remove the fastening bolts.
- Step 30Detach the brake disc from the wheel hub.
- Step 31Clean the brake disc surface that is in contact with the wheel rim. Use a wire brush.
- Step 32Press the hub out of the bearing. At this stage, the inner race of the bearing and the cage with rollers will remain on the hub. Use a bush and bearing driver set and a hydraulic press.
- Step 33Clean the grease from the inner part of the bearing that remains on the hub, using a cloth.
- Step 34Press the hub out of the inner race of the bearing. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a bearing separator and a hydraulic press.
- Step 35Clean the bearing mounting seat on the hub. Use a wire brush. Use an all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 36Press the new bearing on the hub. Use a bush and bearing driver set and a hydraulic press.Replacement: wheel bearing – FORD TRANSIT Bus. Tip from AUTODOC experts:When pressing the wheel bearing on, check to make sure it is positioned correctly. Avoid any misalignment.
