How to change rear shock absorbers on PEUGEOT 406 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC

Replacement: shock absorbers – Peugeot 406 saloon. AUTODOC experts recommend:
- Both shock absorbers of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock absorbers of the rear suspension.
- Please note: all work on the car – Peugeot 406 saloon – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks. - Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts.Use wheel impact socket #19. - Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports. - Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Peugeot 406 saloon - Step 5
Remove the wheel. - Step 6
Support the rear control arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack. - Step 7
Clean the shock absorber fasteners.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray. - Step 8
Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber.Use a combination spanner #18.Use a drive socket #18.Use a ratchet wrench. - Step 9
Remove the fastening bolt. - Step 10
Remove the support from under the rear control arm.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: shock absorbers – Peugeot 406 saloon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms. - Step 11
Lower the car. - Step 12
Open the luggage compartment. - Step 13
Remove the clips of the boot side lining.Use a clip removal tool. - Step 14
Detach the boot side lining. - Step 15Clean the upper fastener of the shock absorber.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.Step 16
Unscrew the upper fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #17.Use an adjustable wrench.AUTODOC recommends:Peugeot 406 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the shock absorber while unscrewing the fastening bolts. - Step 17
Remove the shock absorber. - Step 18
Remove the shock absorber upper mount. - Step 19
Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: shock absorbers – Peugeot 406 saloon. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary. - Step 20
Install the dust boot and the bump stop on the new shock absorber.Replacement: shock absorbers – Peugeot 406 saloon. AUTODOC experts recommend:Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times. - Step 21
Install the top mount on the new shock absorber and fasten it. - Step 22Clean the shock absorber mounting seats.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.Step 23
Place the shock absorber in the wheel arch and fasten it.AUTODOC recommends:Peugeot 406 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the shock absorber while screwing in the fastening bolts.
