How to change rear suspension arm on TOYOTA RAV4 II [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Control Arm for RAV 4 II (CLA2_, XA2_, ZCA2_, ACA2_) and other TOYOTA models
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. AUTODOC experts recommend:
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
Please note: all work on the car – Toyota RAV4 II – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3
Raise the car.
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. Professionals recommend:
If you are using a jack, make sure it rests on a flat surface without any unevenness.Be sure to additionally secure the car with jack stands.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Toyota RAV4 II
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Clean the fastener connecting the sway bar link to the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 8
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the control arm. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9
Remove the stabilizer rod.
Step 10
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 11
Support the rear knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 12
Clean the lower shock absorber fastener. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 13
Clean the fasteners of the bracket that connects the shock absorber to the rear knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 16
Remove the shock absorber. Use a crowbar.
Step 17
Unscrew the fasteners of the bracket that connects the shock absorber to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 18
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 19
Remove the bracket.
Step 20
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Step 21
Make a mark on the camber adjustment bolt.
Step 22
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 23
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar.
Step 24
Remove the arm.
Step 25
Clean the suspension arm mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 26
Install a new arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. Use only new bolts and nuts for installation.
Step 27
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 28
Adjust the position of the alignment bolt according to the mark.
Step 29
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 30
Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 31
Screw in the fastener that connects the sway bar link to the suspension arm.
Step 32
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
For tightening the fasteners correctly, you have to jack up the suspension components to their working position.
Step 33
Tighten the fastener connecting the suspension arm to the rear knuckle. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 113 Nm torque.
Step 34
Tighten the fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 113 Nm torque.
Step 35
Remove the support from under the rear knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 36
Tighten the fastener connecting the sway bar link to the suspension arm. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 44 Nm torque.
Step 37
Clean the mounting seat of the bracket. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 38
Install the bracket.
Step 39
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 40
Tighten the fasteners of the bracket that connects the shock absorber to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 45 Nm torque.
Step 41
Clean the shock absorber mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 42
Install the shock absorber.
Step 43
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 44
Support the rear knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. Tip from AUTODOC:

Tighten the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 37 Nm torque.
Step 46
Remove the support from under the rear knuckle.

Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 47
Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 48
Treat the bracket fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 49
Treat the shock absorber fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 50
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 51
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use ceramic grease.
Step 52
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: rear lower arm – Toyota RAV4 II. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 53
Install the wheel.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Toyota RAV4 II
Step 54
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 55
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 103 Nm torque.
Step 56
Remove the jacks and chocks.
