Replacement: front lower arm – Toyota RAV4 III. AUTODOC recommends:

The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: front lower arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Recommended sequence of steps:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Toyota RAV4 III
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Undo the fasteners of the oil pan lower cover. Use a drive socket #12.
Step 7

Remove the oil pan cover.
Step 8

Remove the cotter pin. Use a flat screwdriver. Use round-nose pliers.
Step 9

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 10

Loosen the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #19.
Step 11

Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a drive socket #22. Use a tap wrench.
Step 12

Remove the front fastener of the control arm.
Step 13

Unscrew the rear arm fastener. Use a drive socket #22. Use a tap wrench.
Step 14

Remove the rear fastener of the control arm.
Step 15

Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #17.
Step 16

Disconnect the spherical joint from the arm.
Step 17

Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 18

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 19

Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20

Install a new arm.

AUTODOC recommends:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 21

Install the rear fastener of the arm.
Step 22

Install the front fastener of the arm.
Step 23

Attach the ball joint to the control arm.
Step 24

Screw the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #17.
Step 25

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 26

Screw the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 133 Nm torque.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 27

Install the cotter pin. Use round-nose pliers.
Step 28

Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 29

Tighten the front fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a drive socket #22. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 175 Nm torque.
Step 30

Tighten the rear fastener of the control arm. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a drive socket #22. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 214 nm torque.
Step 31

Remove the support from under the arm.

Replacement: front lower arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Tip from AUTODOC:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 32

Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 92 nm torque.
Step 33

Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 34

Reinstall the oil pan lower cover.
Step 35

Tighten the fasteners of the oil pan lower cover. Use a drive socket #12.
Step 36

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 37

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Toyota RAV4 III. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 38

Install the wheel.

Replacement: front lower arm – Toyota RAV4 III. Professionals recommend:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 39

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #21.
Step 40

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 103 nm torque.
Step 41

Remove the jacks and chocks.
