How to change rear springs on FORD MONDEO MK3 Saloon [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Springs for MONDEO III Saloon (B4Y) and other FORD models
Both coil springs of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the rear suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Remove the stabilizer rod.
Step 9
Clean the fastener of the parking brake cable. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 10
Release the parking brake cable. Use nippers.
Use a crowbar.
Step 11
Clean the brake caliper fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Unscrew the brake caliper fastening. Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 13
Remove the brake caliper. Use a crowbar.
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. AUTODOC recommends:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 14
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 15
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 16
Remove the fastening bolt. Detach the control arm.
Step 17
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 18
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Remove the fastening bolt. Detach the control arm.
Step 20
Detach the ABS sensor connector.
Step 21
Clean the shock strut fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 22
Unscrew the fastener that connects the suspension strut to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 23
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 24
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 25
Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 26
Remove the fastening bolt. Detach the control arm.
Step 27
Support the rear knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 28
Release the fastener connecting the shock absorber to the rear knuckle. Use a special drive socket to remove the shock absorber. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 29
Detach the shock absorber from the rear knuckle.
Step 30
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 31
Unscrew the upper fasteners of the shock strut. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
AUTODOC recommends:
Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.
Step 32
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 33
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. AUTODOC recommends:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 34
Compress the spring.
Step 35
Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 36
Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 37
Remove the top strut mount.
Step 38
Release the coil spring.
Step 39
Remove the spring.
Step 40
Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
Step 41
Install the dust boot and bump stop on the shock absorber.
Step 42
Install the spring on the shock absorber.
Step 43
Compress the spring.
Step 44
Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 45
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 46
Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
Step 47
Decompress the spring.
Step 48
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 49
Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 50
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 51
Secure the upper fasteners of the shock strut. Do not tighten it.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts. Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon
Step 52
Tighten the upper fasteners of the shock strut. Use a drive socket #10. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.
Step 53
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 54
Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 55
Attach the shock absorber to the rear knuckle.
Step 56
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 57
Screw in the fastener connecting the shock absorber to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 58
Attach the control arm. Install the fastening bolt.
Step 59
Screw in the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 60
Attach the control arm. Install the fastening bolt.
Step 61
Screw in the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 62
Attach the control arm. Install the fastening bolt.
Step 63
Screw in the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 64
Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 65
Tighten the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 103 Nm torque.
Step 66
Tighten the fastener that connects the suspension strut to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 85 Nm torque.
Step 67
Remove the support from under the rear knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 68
Treat the ABS sensor connector. Use dielectric grease.
Step 69
Attach the ABS sensor connector.
Step 70
Install the brake caliper and fix it. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 30 Nm torque.
Step 71
Install the parking brake cable into the brake caliper bracket. Use nippers.
Use a crowbar.
Step 72
Clean the mounting seats of the stabiliser link. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 73
Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 74
Tighten the stabiliser link fastener. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 75
Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 48 Nm torque.
Step 76
Treat the shock strut fasteners. Treat all joints of the stabiliser link. Treat the rear knuckle fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 77
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 78
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 79
Install the wheel.

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 81
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 Nm torque.
Step 82
Remove the jacks and chocks.
