Xtronic CVT gear box: distinctive features & technical characteristics

Xtronic CVT is an electronically controlled continuously variable transmission installed on many Nissans and some Renault and Infiniti models. It has been produced since the mid-2000s. Modern models feature a manual shifting mode with 6 virtual gears. All Xtronic CVTs are manufactured by the Japanese company Jatco, a subsidiary of Nissan Motor Co., Ltd.

Operating principle of Xtronic CVT

In most cases, Xtronic CVT gearbox is a continuously variable transmission driven by a V-belt, electronically controlled and with a hydraulic torque converter. The belt was replaced with a chain for more powerful engines. The versions for hybrid vehicles use a dry clutch instead of the torque converter.

The manual mode uses an electronic control unit with special software. To activate it, the driver should put the gear selector in the “D” position and then nudge it to the left to lock the engaged gear. To shift up or down, the driver has to move the selector left or right – towards “+” or “-” sign.

Common malfunctions of Xtronic CVT gearboxes

Malfunctions Transmissions
The stepper motor often breaks down. JF009E (RE0F08A, RE0F08B); JF010E (RE0F09A, RE0F09B); JF011E (RE0F10A)
Aggressive driving behaviour with sharp braking causes the CVT belt to stretch. JF009E (RE0F08A, RE0F08B); JF011E (RE0F10A); JF010E (RE0F09A, RE0F09B)
Solenoids get clogged and the transmission starts slipping. JF009E (RE0F08A, RE0F08B); JF016E (RE0F10D, RE0F10F); JF017E (RE0F10G, RE0F10E); JF018E (RE0F10F, RE0F03H,  RE0F02H); JF010E (RE0F09A, RE0F09B)
The pressure regulating valve of the oil pump has a short lifespan, it is sensitive to soiling and gets jammed. JF009E (RE0F08A, RE0F08B); JF011E (RE0F10A); JF017E (RE0F10G, RE0F10E); JF010E (RE0F09A, RE0F09B); JF019E (RE0F10H, RE0F10J); JF016E (RE0F10F, RE0F10D)
The transmission control module breaks down prematurely. JF010E (RE0F09A, RE0F09B)
Overheating may cause the CVT’s input and output speed sensors and relief valve to fail. JF011E (RE0F10A)
Bearings of the input and output shafts sometimes wear out even at low mileage. In this case, they produce a specific humming noise. JF011E (RE0F10A)
The CVT pulley bearing often breaks down. JF016E (RE0F10D, RE0F10F)
The hydraulic torque converter may break down prematurely. JF016E (RE0F10D, RE0F10F)
Due to its location, the transmission oil cooler gets soiled rather quickly, causing the gearbox to overheat. JF017E (RE0F10G, RE0F10E); JF018E (RE0F10F, RE0F03H, RE0F02H)
Spline joints wear out fast due to high torque caused by aggressive driving. JF017E (RE0F10G, RE0F10E)
Valves of the electromagnetic clutch burn out. JF018E (RE0F10F, RE0F03H, RE0F02H)
