TD4, TDV6, TDV8 is a line of diesel power units installed on Land Rover vehicles. It is presented by turbocharged engines. Most of them are equipped with a Common Rail direct injection system. However, there are versions with different fuel supply systems: with direct injection and a distribution high-pressure fuel pump without common rail or with injection in a swirl chamber. These motors were a common development of other car makers such as PSA Peugeot, Citroën, Ford Motor Company and BMW. Many versions have twin-turbo, which guarantees maximum efficiency and performance of the motors, also providing excellent traction characteristics.

Common malfunctions of TD4, TDV6 and TDV8 engines
Malfunctions |
Engines |
Unreliable swirl flaps. Due to poor fastening they can tear off and cause damage to pistons and turbine. |
204D3 |
Crankshaft pulley breaks down quite soon. |
204D3 |
The process of demounting injectors is complicated and laborious. In most cases they are to be drilled out. |
224DT, DW12BTED4 |
The pump which supplies fuel into the rail wears down fast due to impurities in diesel fuel. Products of its wear clog the injectors. |
ZSD-424, 306DT, 30DDTX, 276DT |
There is a knocking sound coming from under the bonnet after 200.000 km, which is caused by damage to connecting rod ends. |
ZSD-424 |
The engine stalls or doesn’t start due to a poor design of the crankshaft position sensor. |
306DT, 30DDTX |
Premature failure of crankshaft bearing due to imperfectness of its design. |
306DT, 30DDTX, 276DT |
The turbocharger starts to malfunction due to a defective driving mechanism. |
276DT |
Plastic elements of the intake manifold get cracked, as well as air pipes. |
448DT |
Cracked thermostat casing causes the engine to overheat. |
368DT |
Oil leaking from the turbocharger causes oil starvation of the power unit. |
