CRDi engines: what it stands for and its performance parameters

CRDi are diesel engines installed on Hyundai and KIA cars, where a Common Rail injector system is used for fuel supply. They are equipped with MHI or Garrett turbochargers. Variable-geometry turbines, made by BorgWarner, are installed on some versions. These engines have a belt or chain mechanism drive. Usually the fuel supply system is made by Delphi or Bosch. Depending on the version, the fuel injectors can be electromagnetic or piezoelectric.

Common malfunctions on CRDi engines

Washers under injectors burn out which leads to formation of sludge on the engine. D4CB, D3EA, D4EA, D4EB.
Oil pump pickup tube gets clogged prematurely, which is fraught with bearings misalignment. D4CB, D3EA, D4EA, D4EB.
Injectors and a high-pressure fuel pump have short lifespan. D3EA, D6EA.
A cylinder head can crack in high-mileage vehicles. D4EA, D4EB. 
Due to malfunction of the EGR valve and ECU errors the engine stucks at certain rpms. D4EA, D4EB.
The fuel injectors are apt to soiling, which leads to engine misfiring. D4HA, D3FA, D4FB.
Oil consumption increases during dynamic driving. D4HA.
Ingress of exhaust gases into the cooling system causes engine overheating. D6EA, D4FD.
Frequent driving with almost empty fuel tank results in the airlocks in the fuel system. D6EA.
