Protronic is a continuously variable transmission with a manual shifting function. It is installed on Proton cars, which are produced by Malaysia’s largest car manufacturing company, PROTON Holdings Berhad. This gearbox is available for most modern models of this make.
How it works
The Protronic transmission is based on the VT3 CVT, produced by the Belgian company Punch Powertrain. In automatic mode, the gear ratio is changed steplessly in precise accordance with the driving conditions. The driver can also switch to sport mode for sportier transmission settings.
When the manual mode is engaged, the gear ratio is locked at a certain level by the electronic control module. To shift gear up or down, the driver uses the paddle shifters marked “+” and “-”.
