Sequential Sportshift is a manual gear shifting function on automatic transmissions installed on Acura, Ford, and Honda cars. It debuted in the mid 1990s. It allows the driver to adjust the vehicle driving characteristics to best suit the road conditions.
How it works
The Sequential Sportshift function works on automatic transmissions with a hydraulic torque converter and electronic control. Specialised firmware is responsible for different transmission settings when driving in automatic mode. The electronic module also controls the operation of the actuators that lock up the gear selected by the driver in manual mode
In order to switch to manual mode, the driver slides the gear lever into the corresponding position and chooses the gear moving it to “+” or “-” positions. The manual mode position of the lever is marked “M”. Paddle shifters are also available for manual transmission control.
