How to change front suspension arm / front control arm on FIAT PUNTO 2 (188) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Control Arm for PUNTO (188) and other FIAT models
Replacement: front lower arm – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC:
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right lower control arms.
Please note: all work on the car – Fiat Punto 188 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Fiat Punto 188
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Fiat Punto 188. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.Wear protective goggles.
Step 7
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer bar with the control arm. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Remove the stabilizer bush brackets. Use a crowbar.
Step 9
Unscrew the fastening bolts of the bracket that connects the stabilizer bar to the car body. Use a drive socket #13.
Step 10
Disconnect the stabilizer bar from the control arm.
Step 11
Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 12
Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.
Step 13
Unscrew the rear arm fastener. Use a drive socket #18. Use a tap wrench.
Step 14
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 15
Remove the arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 16
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 17
Install a new arm. Use a crowbar.
Replacement: front lower arm – Fiat Punto 188. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 18
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 19
Screw the fasteners of the ball joint. Use a drive socket #13. Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 20
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 21
Tighten the front fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 Nm torque.
Step 22
Tighten the rear fastener of the control arm. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 nm torque.
Step 23
Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 32 nm torque.
Step 24
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Fiat Punto 188 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 25
Connect the stabilizer bar to the control arm.
Step 26
Screw in the fastener of the bracket that connects the stabilizer bar to the car body. Use a drive socket #13.
Step 27
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 28
Install the stabilizer bush brackets. Use a crowbar.
Step 29
Screw in the fastener connecting the stabilizer bar to the control arm. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 30
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Fiat Punto 188. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 31
Tighten the fasteners that connect the stabilizer bar to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 nm torque.
Step 32
Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 33
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 34
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: front lower arm – Fiat Punto 188. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 35
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Fiat Punto 188
Step 36
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 37
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 86 nm torque.
Step 38
Remove the jacks and chocks.
