How to change Front Springs on AUDI A4 B6 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Springs for A4 Saloon (8E2, B6) and other AUDI models
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B6. Professionals recommend:
Both coil springs of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the front suspension.
Please note: all work on the car – Audi A4 B6 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B6
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 9
Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 10
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 11
Detach the upper control arm from the steering knuckle. Use a pin punch. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 12
Detach the bottom part of the shock strut.
Step 13
Lower the car.
Step 14
Open the bonnet.
Step 15
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 16
Remove the cowl grille seal.
Step 17
Raise up and remove the cowl grille.
Step 18
Remove the shock strut mount cap. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 19
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20
Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
AUTODOC recommends:
Audi A4 B6 – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.
Step 21
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 22
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B6. Tip:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 23
Compress the spring.
Step 24
Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 25
Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 26
Remove the top mount, the support bearing and the upper spring cup.
Step 27
Release the coil spring.
Step 28
Remove the spring.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B6. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
Step 29
Install the spring.
Step 30
Compress the spring.
Step 31
Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 32
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B6. Tip from AUTODOC:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 33
Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
Step 34
Decompress the spring.
Step 35
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 36
Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 37
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 38
Screw the top fastening of the shock strut mount.
AUTODOC recommends:
Audi A4 B6 – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 39
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 75 Nm torque.
Step 40
Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use copper grease.
Step 41
Install the shock strut mount cap.
Step 42
Install and secure the cowl grille.
Step 43
Install the cowl grille seal.
Step 44
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 45
Close the hood.
Step 46
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 47
Attach the bottom part of the shock strut. Use a hammer.
Step 48
Attach the upper control arm to the steering knuckle. Use a hammer.
Step 49
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 50
Tighten the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 45 Nm torque.
Step 51
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 52
Tighten the lower fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 Nm torque.
Step 53
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B6. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 54
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 55
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B6. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 56
Install the wheel.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Audi A4 B6
Step 57
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 58
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 59
Remove the jacks and chocks.
