How to change rear springs on AUDI A4 B5 Saloon [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B5 saloon. AUTODOC experts recommend:
- Both coil springs of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the rear suspension.
- Please note: all work on the car – Audi A4 B5 saloon – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Remove the rear seat backrest.
- Step 2Remove the side plastic cover.Step 3Remove the retainer of the side trim panel. Use a clip removal tool.
- Step 4Move the side trim panel aside.
- Step 5Loosen the upper fasteners of the suspension strut. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 6Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 7Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 8Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 9Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B5 saloon
- Step 10Remove the wheel.
- Step 11Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 12Clean the lower fastener connecting the suspension strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 13Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 14Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
- Step 15Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 16Unscrew the upper fasteners of the shock strut.AUTODOC recommends:Audi A4 B5 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.Step 17Remove the suspension strut. Use a crowbar.
- Step 18Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Professionals recommend:Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
- Step 19Compress the spring.
- Step 20Remove the shock strut mount cap. Use a crowbar.
- Step 21Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 22Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a shock absorber socket DD№5,2. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 23Remove the top strut mount.
- Step 24Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
- Step 25Release the coil spring.
- Step 26Remove the spring.
- Step 27Install the spring on the shock absorber.
- Step 28Compress the spring.
- Step 29Install the boot and a bump stop onto the shock absorber.
- Step 30Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
- Step 31Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #16. Use a shock absorber socket DD№5,2. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.Step 32Decompress the spring.
- Step 33Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.Step 34Install the shock strut mount cap.
