Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. AUTODOC recommends:
- Both coil springs of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right coil springs of the front suspension.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. Recommended sequence of steps:
- Step 1Open the bonnet.
- Step 2Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
- Step 3Raise up and remove the cowl grille.
- Step 4Remove the shock strut mount cap. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 5Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 6Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 7Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 8Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 9Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 10Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B7
- Step 11Remove the wheel.
- Step 12Clean all joints of the arm. Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Clean the shock strut fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 13Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16.
- Step 14Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 15Loosen the tie rod end fastening bolt. Use a combination spanner #13.
- Step 16Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 17Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
- Step 18Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
- Step 19Remove the control arms. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
- Step 20Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 21Unscrew the fastener connecting the shock strut to the suspension control arm. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 22Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. AUTODOC experts recommend:To avoid injuries, hold the shock strut when undoing the fastening bolts.
- Step 23Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 24Unscrew the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #18 (2 pieces).
- Step 25Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #18 (2 pieces).Step 26Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.AUTODOC recommends:Audi A4 B7 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
- Step 27Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 28Remove the suspension strut.
- Step 29Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. Tip from AUTODOC:Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
- Step 30Treat the shock strut rod. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 31Compress the spring.
- Step 32Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #18. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 33Remove the top strut mount. Use a crowbar.
- Step 34Release the coil spring.
- Step 35Remove the spring.
- Step 36Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. Tip:Τhoroughly examine the shock absorber mount, dust boot, bump stop. Replace them if necessary.Step 37Install the spring on the shock absorber.
- Step 38Compress the spring.
- Step 39Install the mount, the boot and the bump stop on the shock absorber.
- Step 40Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
- Step 41Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. Tip from AUTODOC experts:Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
- Step 42Decompress the spring.
- Step 43Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
- Step 44Remove the assembled shock strut.
- Step 45Treat the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 46Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
- Step 47Screw the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench. Do not tighten it.Replacement: coil springs – Audi A4 B7. Tip from AUTODOC:To avoid injuries, hold the shock strut when screwing the fastening bolts in.
- Step 48Install the fastener connecting the shock strut to the suspension control arm.
