TFSI (Turbo fuel stratified injection) is a trade name that belongs to the Volkswagen Group. It is used for marking turbocharged engines with direct fuel injection system installed on Audi cars since 2004. This name is also used for some versions of 2 litre engines used on SEAT, Škoda, and Volkswagen cars.
Features of TFSI engines
Most of the TFSI engines are 4 cylinder power units with 8 or 16 valves. Versions with 6 cylinders and 24 valves are much rarer. The engine block is usually made of aluminium, however it can also be made of cast iron. The engines are equipped with a turbocharger, often a variable geometry one. Twin-turbo versions are also popular. The valve timing system is usually chain- or belt-driven. However, there are also combined versions of the timing mechanism, which use a chain and a belt at the same time.
