D-4D is a series of diesel turbocharged engines with the Common Rail direct fuel injection system. They are installed on Toyota and Lexus cars. The engines were first featured in the 1999 Toyota Avensis. They quickly gained a reputation as being reliable, durable, high-performance, and fuel-saving engines.
Features of D-4D engines
Most D-4D engines have 4 cylinders arranged in line and 16 valves. 1VD-FTV engines with 8 cylinders and 32 valves and 1ND-TV and 2WZ-TV with 4 cylinders and 8 valves are the exceptions. Depending on the version, the engine block can be made of aluminium or cast iron. As a rule, the fuel system is made by Denso, less commonly by Siemens or Bosch. The valve timing mechanism uses a chain. Only a few versions are made with a belt. All D-4D engines are turbocharged. Some of them can feature an intercooler. Sometimes, a variable-geometry turbocharger is used instead of a regular one.
