DIY Volkswagen Golf repair and maintenance

Engine

  • A throttle valve often gets dirty. This results in low or unstable idle speed. Although you can clean the unit at home, you will need special equipment to do the throttle body alignment after you have cleaned it. Watch our video tutorial for proper DIY VW Golf repair and maintenance.
  • A timing belt wears out after 80,000 kilometres due to sharp acceleration. Careful driving style will help to extend the lifespan of the component to 90,000–110,000 kilometres on average. Ignoring the scheduled replacement times will lead to the belt break and engine valves deformation. A new component should be installed at a car repair shop. However, you can check it for scuffs and cracks yourself: all you need is to remove the timing belt cover. The component replacement requires new tensioner and guide pulleys, water pump and, in some cases, V-ribbed belt.
  • Owners of 1J1 cars with petrol engines often experience an oil pump failure. If the oil pressure in the system decreases and the oil consumption increases, do not use the vehicle — contact a car service center. If the system works properly, you can change the oil yourself with the help of our step-by-step Volkswagen Golf repair and operation manual.

Body

  • Paintwork on the front arches, sills and bonnet is apt to scuffing and peeling. To slow down these processes, apply a transparent protection film to the body.
  • Even the slightest mechanical impact may result in scratches on the windscreen. To avoid this, use a soft cloth and special non-abrasive auto-chemical products for care and regularly replace the windscreen wiper blades. Download our free step-by-step video tutorial on Volkswagen Golf repair  to install new components in just a few minutes.

Suspension

  • The rear wheel hub bearings of 5K1 cars break down fast. The main symptom of their failure is the humming noise at driving. You can replace the parts yourself with the help of our tips.
  • Stabilizer links of 5K1 cars wear out fast. This makes a body roll at maneuvering and rock at sharp braking. Before you install new stabilizer links, read the illustrated PDF manual on Volkswagen Golf repair.
