Engine
- A cylinder head of diesel power units in B1–B5 cars is apt to crack. You can remove minor defects yourself if you have proper equipment.
- If you own a car produced before 2004, you should regularly check a camshaft of the petrol engine. Do not ignore its scheduled inspection. Timely removal of small camshaft scuffs will help to extend the lifespan of the power unit itself.
- Timing chain tensioners break down fast. Check them every time you repair and service VW Passat yourself.
- The oil pump of both petrol and diesel turbocharged engines may fail. Inspect the turbine vanes yourself: if there are oil leaks on the turbine impeller, immediately contact the car service.
Exhaust system
- The main reason of a clogged catalytic converter is poor-quality fuel. You can easily recognize this problem by the lowered vehicle performance. Transmission
