DIY Volkswagen Passat repair and maintenance

Engine

  • A cylinder head of diesel power units in B1–B5 cars is apt to crack. You can remove minor defects yourself if you have proper equipment.
  • If you own a car produced before 2004, you should regularly check a camshaft of the petrol engine. Do not ignore its scheduled inspection. Timely removal of small camshaft scuffs will help to extend the lifespan of the power unit itself.
  • Timing chain tensioners break down fast. Check them every time you repair and service VW Passat yourself.
  • The oil pump of both petrol and diesel turbocharged engines may fail. Inspect the turbine vanes yourself: if there are oil leaks on the turbine impeller, immediately contact the car service.

Exhaust system

  • The main reason of a clogged catalytic converter is poor-quality fuel. You can easily recognize this problem by the lowered vehicle performance. Most of the exhaust system elements can be installed in your garage, with the help of step-by-step manual on Volkswagen Passat repair and operation. You should use new gaskets.

Transmission

  • Don’t skid at high RPM if your car is equipped with an automatic transmission. Violation of this recommendation may lead to the torque converter overheating and friction plates deformation.
  • Buttons on automatic transmission lever may jam due to moisture or dust. In most cases, you can eliminate this problem by treating the lever with an anti-corrosion fluid.

Suspension

  • Bushings rapidly fail. Their malfunction leads to the decreased vehicle stability and impossibility to align wheels. The reasons can be a continuous car operation in the extreme cold weather or improper repair. The latter often results in the oil leak on the rubber elements and their accelerated wear-out. Having downloaded free illustrated PDF manual on Volkswagen Passat repair, you will be able to avoid mistakes when mounting new components.
  • CV boots may split if you frequently use your car in off-road conditions. If a CV boot breaks, you will hear a crackle while driving. Replace the part as soon as possible; otherwise you will have to install a new CV joint. Watch a special video guide – our step-by-step video tutorial on Volkswagen Passat repair.
