How to change spark plug on VW GOLF 4 (1J1) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: spark plugs – VW Golf 4. Professionals recommend:
- The replacement procedure is the same for all spark plugs.
- Warning! Shut down the engine before starting any work – VW Golf 4
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Open the hood.
- Step 2Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
- Step 3Remove the engine cover.Replacement: spark plugs – VW Golf 4. Tip:Raise the engine cover, holding it on two sides simultaneously.
- Step 4Remove the battery cover.
- Step 5Unscrew the fasteners of the car battery terminals. Use a combination spanner #10.
- Step 6Remove the battery terminals.Step 7Unscrew the fastener of the secondary air pump bracket. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 8Unscrew the fastener connecting the secondary air pump to its bracket. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 9Detach the pipes and the connector from the secondary air pump.
- Step 10Remove the secondary air pump from its bracket.
- Step 11Detach the retainers of the ignition cables. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 12Unscrew the fastener of the secondary air pump bracket. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 13Remove the bracket of the secondary air pump.
- Step 14Unscrew the intake manifold fasteners. Use HEX No.H6. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 15Disconnect the vacuum sensor.
- Step 16Unscrew the intake manifold fasteners. Use Torx T25. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 17Detach the intake manifold.
- Step 18Detach the vacuum pipe. Use round-nose pliers.
- Step 19Remove the intake manifold.
- Step 20Cover the intake manifold passages with a microfibre towel to prevent dust and dirt from getting inside.
- Step 21Remove the spark plug wire connectors from the spark plug wells.Replacement: spark plugs – VW Golf 4. AUTODOC recommends:Be careful to avoid damaging spark plug wires.Remember the sequence of the spark plug wires connectors.
- Step 22Clean dirt, dust and debris from inside the spark plug wells.
- Step 23Unscrew the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 24Take out the spark plugs. Use the spark plug socket #16.
- Step 25Apply a thin layer of a special high temperature anti-seize lubricant to the threads of the new spark plugs.
- Step 26Install the new spark plugs into their mounting seats. Use the spark plug socket #16.
- Step 27Screw new spark plugs and tighten them. Use the spark plug socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 nm torque.Replacement: spark plugs – VW Golf 4. AUTODOC experts recommend:Don't tighten the plugs with excessive force. Exceeding tightening torque can damage the thread connection. Be careful when working with a spark plug wrench. Its skewing can cause damage to the threaded connection.
- Step 28Treat the spark plug wire connectors. Use high-temperature grease. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 29Install the spark plug wire connectors into the spark plug wells. Make sure you hear a click indicating that it is locked in place.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: spark plugs – VW Golf 4. Follow the installation steps.
- Step 30Clean the intake manifold fasteners. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 31Remove the intake manifold gasket. Use a flat screwdriver.
