How to change front shock absorbers on FORD MONDEO 3 TUTORIAL | AUTODOC
All the parts you need to replace – Shock Absorber for MONDEO III Estate (BWY) and other FORD models
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Both shock struts of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Ford Mondeo BWY
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7
Unscrew the end fastening nut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8
Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 9
Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 10
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #17. Use HEX No.H5. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 11
Remove the bracket from the shock absorber strut.
Step 12
Remove the stabilizer rod.
Step 13
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Remove the fastening bolts (2 pieces).
Step 16
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. AUTODOC recommends:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 17
Detach the brake hose from the shock strut. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 18
Remove the brake disc.
Step 19
Detach the ABS sensor connector. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 20
Clean the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 21
Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use a drive socket #32. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 23
Clean the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 24
Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use Torx T55. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 25
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 26
Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
Step 27
Remove the drive shaft from the wheel hub. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Tip:
Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
Step 28
Clean the brake hose bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 29
Unscrew the brake hose fastening bracket from the shock strut. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 30
Disconnect the brake hose mounting bracket.
Step 31
Clean the fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 32
Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 33
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 34
Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut. Use a hammer.
Step 35
Lower the car.
Step 36
Open the bonnet.
Step 37
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 38
Remove the protective cap of the shock absorber mount. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 39
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 40
Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
AUTODOC recommends:
Ford Mondeo BWY – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.
Step 41
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 42
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 43
Compress the spring.
Step 44
Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 45
Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a flat screwdriver. Use a drive socket #18. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 46
Remove the shock absorber mount, boot and bump stop. Use a flat screwdriver.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
Step 47
Release the coil spring.
Step 48
Remove the spring.

Remove the old shock absorber from the hydraulic coil spring compressor.
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Tip from AUTODOC:
Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.

Install the new shock absorber on the hydraulic coil spring compressor.

Install the spring on the shock absorber.

Compress the spring.

Install the dust sleeve and the bump stop on the new shock absorber.
Step 54
Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing. Use HEX No.H5.
Step 55
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a flat screwdriver. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 58 Nm torque.
Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Tip:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.

Decompress the spring.
Step 57
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 58
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 59
Screw the top fastening of the shock strut mount.

Important! Hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts. Ford Mondeo BWY
Step 60
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 30 Nm torque.

Install the protective shock absorber mounting cap.
Step 62
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 63
Close the hood.
Step 64
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 65
Treat the shock strut mounting seat on the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Fix the shock absorber strut on the steering knuckle. Use a hammer.

Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.

Release the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.

Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.

Install the fastening bolt.

Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.

Replacement: suspension strut – Ford Mondeo BWY. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.

Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

Mount the drive shaft into the
wheel hub.

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.

Install the fastening bolt. Use a hammer.

Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use Torx T55. Use a drive socket #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 83 Nm torque.

Tighten the lower fasteners connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 83 Nm torque.
Step 78
Treat the shock strut fasteners. Use copper grease.

Attach the ABS sensor connector.

Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 81
Install the bracket onto the shock absorber strut.

Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #17. Use HEX No.H5. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 48 Nm torque.
Step 83
Install the fastening nut.
Step 84
Tighten the drive shaft nut. Use a drive socket #32. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 290 Nm torque.
Step 85
Install the brake disc.

Clean the mounting seats of the caliper and its bracket. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 87
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 88
Install the fastening bolts (2 pieces).
Step 89
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 75 Nm torque.
Step 90
Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
Step 91
Tighten the fastening nut connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 nm torque.
Step 92
Treat the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use copper grease.
Step 93
Secure the brake hose fastening bracket.
Step 94
Tighten the brake hose fastening bracket to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 31 nm torque.
Step 95
Fasten the brake hose on the strut.
Step 96
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 97
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.

Install the wheel.

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 nm torque.

Remove the jacks and chocks.
