How to change front strut mount on FORD MONDEO MK3 Saloon [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Strut Mount for MONDEO III Saloon (B4Y) and other FORD models
Replacement: strut mount – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:
The replacement procedure is identical for the mounts of the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
All mounts of the front shock struts should be replaced simultaneously.
Please note: all work on the car – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Open the bonnet.
Step 2
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 4
Loosen the upper fasteners of the suspension strut (3 pieces). Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 5
Clean the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 6
Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a drive socket #32. Use a tap wrench.
Step 7
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 8
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 9
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 10
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon
Step 11
Remove the wheel.
Step 12
Disconnect the ABS sensor wiring.
Step 13
Clean the stabiliser link fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14
Unscrew the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Remove the stabilizer rod.
Step 16
Clean the fasteners connecting the brake hose to the shock strut.
Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 17
Unscrew the brake hose fastening bracket from the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #15.
Step 18
Clean the lower fastener connecting the suspension strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 19
Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 20
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 21
Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use a drive socket #32. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Remove the fastening nut.
Step 23
Clean the fasteners connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 24
Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 25
Remove the fastening bolts.
Step 26
Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
Replacement: strut mount – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Professionals recommend:
Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
Step 27
Disconnect the spherical joint from the arm.
Step 28
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 29
Release the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a special drive socket to remove the shock absorber. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 30
Disconnect the steering knuckle from the shock absorber strut.
Step 31
Unscrew the upper fasteners of the shock strut (3 pieces).
AUTODOC recommends:
Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts.
Step 32
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 33
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: strut mount – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. AUTODOC recommends:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 34
Compress the spring.
Step 35
Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 36
Unscrew the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 37
Remove the top strut mount.
Replacement: strut mount – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:
Examine the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop. Replace them if necessary.
Step 38
Install a new strut mount.
Step 39
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #19. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 55 Nm torque.
Replacement: strut mount – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 40
Decompress the spring.
Step 41
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 42
Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 43
Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
Step 44
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 45
Secure the upper fasteners of the shock strut (3 pieces). Do not tighten it.
AUTODOC recommends:
Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 46
Treat the shock strut mounting seat on the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 47
Fix the shock absorber strut on the steering knuckle.
Step 48
Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 49
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 50
Screw in the fastener that connects the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #15. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 51
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: strut mount – Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 52
Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 53
Install the drive shaft.
Step 54
Attach the ball joint to the control arm.
Step 55
Install the fastening bolts.
Step 56
Screw in the fastener connecting the ball joint to the control arm. Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 57
Tighten the fasteners connecting the ball joint to the control arm. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 48 Nm torque.
Step 58
Tighten the lower fastening of the shock absorber. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 83 Nm torque.
Step 59
Install the fastening nut.
Step 60
Screw the nut of the drive shaft. Use a drive socket #32. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 61
Clean the brake hose bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 62
Tighten the brake hose fastening bracket to the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #15. Use a drive socket #15. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 32 Nm torque.
Step 63
Clean the mounting seats of the stabiliser link. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 64
Ιnstall the transverse stabilizer link.
Step 65
Tighten the stabiliser link fastener. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 66
Tighten the fastener connecting the stabilizer link to the shock strut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 48 Nm torque.
Step 67
Connect the ABS sensor wiring.
Step 68
Treat the shock strut fasteners. Treat the steering knuckle fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 69
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 70
Clean the brake disk surface. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 71
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Ford Mondeo Mk3 saloon
Step 72
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 73
Lower the car.
Step 74
Tighten the drive shaft nut. Use a drive socket #32. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 290 Nm torque.
Step 75
Tighten the wheel bolts using a criss-cross pattern. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 Nm torque.
Step 76
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Step 77
Tighten the upper fasteners of the shock strut (3 pieces). Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 30 Nm torque.
Step 78
Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use copper grease.
Step 79
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 80
Close the hood.

1 point for clarity, what is the special tool and its' functional at 'Step 29'? I presume some sort of tool to splay the lower knuckle joint? Or is there some kind of threaded feature not shown on the video?
