Replacement: ball joint – Volvo XC90 1. Tip:

The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right ball joints.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: ball joint – Volvo XC90 1. Take the following steps:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Volvo XC90 1
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7

Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8

Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9

Remove the fastening bolts.

Step 10

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer. Use a crowbar.
Step 11

Disconnect the spherical joint from the arm. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 12

Remove the ball joint. Use a crowbar.
Step 13

Clean the ball joint mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14

Install a new ball joint. Use a crowbar.

Replacement: ball joint – Volvo XC90 1. Professionals recommend:
Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 15

Attach the ball joint to the control arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 16

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 17

Install the fastening bolts.

Step 18

Tighten the ball joint fastener. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 nm torque.
Step 19

Tighten the fasteners connecting the ball joint to the control arm. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 100 nm torque.
Step 20

Treat the fasteners of the ball joint. Use copper grease.
Step 21

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 22

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: ball joint – Volvo XC90 1. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 23

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Volvo XC90 1
Step 24

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 25

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 140 nm torque.
Step 26

Remove the jacks and chocks.
