Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. Tip from AUTODOC experts:

The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right ball joints.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. Take the following steps:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 3

Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW T5 Transporter
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.Wear protective goggles.Wear a respirator.
Step 7

Unscrew the ball joint fastening to the steering knuckle. Use XZN #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 8

Unscrew the fastener connecting the ball joint to the suspension control arm. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9

Unscrew the front arm fastener. Use a combination spanner #21.
Step 10

Unscrew the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #21.
Step 11

Disconnect the ball joint from the steering knuckle. Use a crowbar.
Step 12

Remove the ball joint. Use a ball joint puller.
Step 13

Clean the ball joint mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 14

Install a new ball joint.

Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. Tip from AUTODOC:
Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 15

Connect the ball joint to the steering knuckle.
Step 16

Screw the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 17

Screw in the fastener connecting the ball joint to the control arm. Use a drive socket #21. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 18

Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 19

Screw the fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #21.
Step 20

Screw the rear fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #21.
Step 21

Tighten the front fastener connecting the control arm to the subframe. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 Nm torque.+120°

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 22

Tighten the rear fastener connecting the arm to the body subframe. Use a combination spanner #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 110 Nm torque.+120°

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 23

Tighten the fastener connecting the ball joint to the steering knuckle. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 90 Nm torque.+45°

Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. Tip:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 24

Remove the support from under the arm.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 25

Tighten the fasteners connecting the ball joint to the control arm. Use a drive socket #21. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 60 Nm torque.+90°

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 26

Treat all joints of the arm. Use copper grease.
Step 27

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 28

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: ball joint – VW T5 Transporter. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 29

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. VW T5 Transporter
Step 30

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 31

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 180 Nm torque.
Step 32

Remove the jacks and chocks.
