How to change car battery on a car – replacement tutorial

Sometimes even experienced drivers find it difficult to answer which battery terminal to disconnect first before removing the battery or working with the car's electric system.
Yet, there are certain rules to follow not only for removing the battery, but also for installing one, measuring its charge, and operating it.

1.

A battery has two terminals, one positive and one negative

The negative one is connected to the car body or engine block
3.

The positive one is connected to the car's electrical system containing the following consumers: a starter, ignition coils, electronic control units, various servos, headlights, an infotainment system, and other devices.

When removing the battery, disconnect the negative terminal first

In the process of removing the battery terminals, you can accidentally touch its bracket, metal parts in the engine compartment, or the car body. In case you're removing the positive terminal first, this will lead to a short circuit.

Moreover, there will be residual voltage in the system for some time after disconnecting the positive terminal, meaning that contact between the terminal and metal parts will also cause a short circuit
7.

When installing a battery, you should, vice versa, connect the positive terminal first.
