How to change automatic transmission fluid | AUTODOC tips

a torque wrench
an automatic transmission filter
automatic transmission fluid
an automatic transmission pan gasket or new transmission pan assembly
a new drain plug with a seal
new fastening bolts (if the old ones are in poor condition)
a container for the drained transmission fluid
a cleaning agent for car parts
a funnel or syringe
goggles and gloves.
Please note!
- If your automatic transmission has a dipstick, just drop a little fluid on a paper towel and observe the fluid colour.
- Bright colour: the fluid is in normal condition.
- Darkened fluid: there is a slight contamination.
- Pale fluid: there is water or coolant in the transmission.
- If your car has no dipstick, change the fluid at the intervals stated by the car manufacturer in the car owner's manual. Warning! For models with no ATF dipstick, please refer to your car's service manual for the proper method of checking the fluid level and replacing it.
- 1.Warm up the gearbox by driving about 5 km.
- 2.Lift your car or use an inspection pit.
- 3.Switch off the engine, shift the gear to neutral, and apply the handbrake.
- 4.Place the container under the transmission pan.
- 5.Unscrew the drain plug and wait for the transmission fluid to flow out.
- 6.Unscrew the transmission pan bolts and pour out the rest of the fluid.Caution!Be extremely careful when removing the unscrewed transmission pan. You could spill the fluid over yourself.
- 7.Remove the automatic transmission filter.
- 8.Clean the pan and magnets. Prepare the mating faces of the transmission case and the pan: remove the old sealant and degrease the surface.AUTODOC recommends:Inspect the gearbox magnets: a large amount of metal chips indicates wear of the assembly.
