How to change rear suspension arm / rear control arm on VW TOURAN 1 (1T1, 1T2) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. List of the tools you'll need:

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. AUTODOC experts recommend:

The replacement procedure is identical for the right and left upper control arms.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. Recommended sequence of steps:

Step 1

Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts.Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3

Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:

Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Touran 1T1 1T2
Step 5

Remove the wheel.
Step 6

Clean all joints of the arm.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 7

Make a mark on the camber adjustment bolt.
Step 8

Unscrew the arm fastening to the beam.Use a combination spanner #18.Use a drive socket #18.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 9

Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 10

Clean the exhaust system fastener.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 11

Remove the exhaust system fastener.Use a crowbar.
Step 12

Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Step 13

Remove the support from under the arm.

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. AUTODOC recommends:

Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 14

Take out the spring.
Step 15

Clean all joints of the arm.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 16

Unscrew the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle. Use a drive socket #21.Use a combination spanner #21.
Step 17

Remove the mounting bracket of the ABS sensor wiring from the upper arm. Use a crowbar.
Step 18

Clean all joints of the arm.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 19

Make a mark on the camber adjustment bolt.
Step 20

Unscrew the arm fastening to the beam.Use a drive socket #18.Use a combination spanner #18.
Step 21

Remove the fastening bolt. Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Step 22

Remove the fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #21.
Step 23

Remove the rear upper arm.
Step 24

Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 25

Mount the rear upper arm.

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. Professionals recommend:

During the installation process, use only new bolts and nuts.Do not damage the ball joint cover.
Step 26

Install the fastening bolt.
Step 27

Screw in the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear subframe. Use a drive socket #18.Use a combination spanner #18.
Step 28

Install the fastening bolt.
Step 29

Screw in the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle.Use a drive socket #21.Use a combination spanner #21.
Step 30

Prop up the steering knuckle.Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 31

Tighten the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear subframe. Use a combination spanner #18.Use a drive socket #18.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 85 Nm torque.
Step 32

Tighten the fasteners connecting the control arm to the rear knuckle.Use a drive socket #21.Use a combination spanner #21.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 95 Nm torque.
Step 33

Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.

AUTODOC recommends:

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 34

Treat all joints of the arm.Use copper grease.
Step 35

Install the mounting bracket of the ABS sensor wiring onto the upper arm.
Step 36

Treat all joints of the arm.Use copper grease.
Step 37

Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats.
Step 38

Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm. Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 39

Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 40

Install the fastening bolt.

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. Tip from AUTODOC:

Adjust the position of the alignment bolt according to the mark.
Step 41

Remove the support from under the arm.

AUTODOC recommends:

VW Touran 1T1 1T2 – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 42

Tighten the fastener connecting the control arm to the rear subframe. Use a combination spanner #18.Use a drive socket #18.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 95 Nm torque.
Step 43

Clean the exhaust system fastener.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 44

Install the exhaust system fastener.
Step 45

Treat all joints of the arm.Use copper grease.
Step 46

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 47

Clean the brake disk surface.Use a brake cleaner.

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. Tip from AUTODOC experts:

After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 48

Install the wheel.

Replacement: rear upper arm – VW Touran 1T1 1T2. Tip:

To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 49

Screw in the wheel bolts.Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 50

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 120 nm torque.
Step 51

Remove the jacks and chocks.
