Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. AUTODOC experts recommend:

Both shock struts of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock struts of the rear suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.

Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Use the following procedure:

Step 1

Remove the rear seat backrest.
Step 2

Remove the side plastic cover.
Step 3

Remove the retainer of the side trim panel. Use a clip removal tool.
Step 4

Move the side trim panel aside.
Step 5

Loosen the upper fasteners of the suspension strut. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 6

Secure the wheels with chocks.

Step 7

Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 8

Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 9

Unscrew the wheel bolts.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 10

Remove the wheel.
Step 11

Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 12

Clean the lower fastener connecting the suspension strut to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 13

Unscrew the lower fastener connecting the shock strut to the steering knuckle. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 14

Lower the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 15

Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 16

Unscrew the upper fasteners of the shock strut.

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 17

Remove the suspension strut. Use a crowbar.
Step 18

Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.

Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 19

Compress the spring.
Step 20

Remove the shock strut mount cap. Use a crowbar.
Step 21

Treat the shock strut rod. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 22

Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #17. Use a shock absorber socket DD№5,2. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 23

Remove the top strut mount.

Step 24

Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Carefully inspect the mount, the boot, and the bump stop of the shock absorber. Replace if necessary.
Step 25

Release the coil spring.
Step 26

Remove the spring.
Step 27

Remove the old shock absorber from the hydraulic coil spring compressor.

Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. AUTODOC experts recommend:
Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.
Step 28

Install the new shock absorber on the hydraulic coil spring compressor.
Step 29

Install the spring on the shock absorber.
Step 30

Compress the spring.
Step 31

Install the dust sleeve and the bump stop on the new shock absorber.
Step 32

Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 33

Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a drive socket #16. Use a shock absorber socket DD№5,2. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.

Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 34

Decompress the spring.
Step 35

Treat the shock strut rod. Use copper grease.
Step 36

Install the shock strut mount cap.
Step 37

Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 38

Clean the mounting seats of the shock strut. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 39

Install the shock strut into the wheel arch. Use a crowbar.
Step 40

Install the fastening bolt.
Step 41

Secure the upper fasteners of the shock strut. Do not tighten it.

AUTODOC recommends:
Audi A4 B5 saloon – To avoid injury, hold the suspension strut while screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 42

Screw in the lower fastener of the shock strut. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 43

Raise the hydraulic transmission jack by 10-15 cm.
Step 44

Tighten the lower fastening of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 50 Nm torque.+90°

AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 45

Remove the support from under the rear axle beam.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 46

Treat the shock strut fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 47

Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 48

Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 49

Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.

AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: suspension strut – Audi A4 B5 saloon. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 50

Install the wheel.

AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 51

Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 52

Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 53

Remove the jacks and chocks.
Step 54

Tighten the upper fasteners of the shock strut. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 nm torque.
Step 55

Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use copper grease.

Step 56

Return the side trim panel to its initial position.
Step 57

Install the side trim panel retainer.
Step 58

Install the side plastic panel.
Step 59

Reinstall the rear seat backrest.
