How to change rear brake caliper on AUDI A3 1 (8L1) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Brake Calipers for A3 Hatchback (8L1) and other AUDI models
Replacement: brake caliper – Audi A3 8L1. AUTODOC recommends:
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right brake calipers on the same axle.
Please note: all work on the car – Audi A3 8L1 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Open the bonnet. Unscrew the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 2
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 3
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 4
Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
Step 5
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: brake caliper – Audi A3 8L1. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 6
Remove the wheel.
Step 7
Disconnect the ABS sensor electric socket. Disconnect the brake pad wear sensor plug. Remove the ABS sensor connector. Remove the connector of the brake pad wear sensor.
Please note!
Some cars are not equipped with the brake pad wear sensor.
Step 8
Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
Step 9
Clean the area where the brake hose is connected to the caliper, and the guide pins area. Clean the brake caliper fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: brake caliper – Audi A3 8L1. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 10
Clamp the brake hose off using a brake hose clamp.
Step 11
Put a container for gathering brake fluid beneath.
Step 12
Unscrew the brake hose from the brake caliper. Use a combination spanner #18.
Step 13
Move the brake hose aside. Tie the brake hose to the car body with a hook or a piece of wire.
Step 14
Detach the parking brake return spring. Use water pump pliers.
Step 15
Remove the retaining clip of the parking brake cable. Use a crowbar.
Step 16
Disconnect the parking brake cable from the caliper. Use water pump pliers.
Step 17
Release the parking brake cable.
Step 18
Unscrew the brake caliper fastening. Use a combination spanner #13. Use a combination spanner #15. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 19
Remove the brake caliper.
Step 20
Remove the brake pads.
Replacement: brake caliper – Audi A3 8L1. Tip:
When replacing a brake caliper it is recommended to replace brake pads, check the state of the brake discs and replace them with new ones if necessary.
Step 21
If going to use the old brake pads, clean them. Use a wire brush. Use a brake cleaner.

Step 22
Clean the brake caliper bracket from dirt and dust. Use a wire brush. Use a brake cleaner.

Step 23
Treat the contact surfaces between the brake pads and the brake caliper bracket. Use anti-squeal paste.
Step 24
Install the brake pads.
Step 25
Install the brake caliper and fix it.
Step 26
Screw in the brake caliper fasteners.
Please note!
Install the brake caliper starting with its lower part. Hold up the brake caliper.
Step 27
Tighten the brake caliper fasteners. Important! Be sure to use new fasteners. Use a combination spanner #15. Use a drive socket #13. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.
Step 28
Install the parking brake cable into the brake caliper bracket. Secure the parking brake cable with the retaining clip.
Step 29
Pull aside the parking brake mechanism. Use water pump pliers.
Step 30
Attach the parking brake cable to the parking brake mechanism.
Step 31
Install the return spring of the parking brake mechanism.
Step 32
Unscrew the plug from the brake hose mounting seat on the brake caliper. Use a ratchet wrench. Use HEX No.H6.
Step 33
Install the brake hose to the new brake caliper.
Step 34
Tighten the brake hose fastener. Use a combination spanner #18. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 35 Nm torque.
Step 35
Remove the brake hose clamp.
Replacement: brake caliper – Audi A3 8L1. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Bleed the brake caliper system.
Step 36
Connect the ABS sensor electric socket. Connect the brake pad wear sensor plug.
Step 37
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 38
Install the wheel.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. Audi A3 8L1
Step 39
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 40
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 41
Remove the jacks and chocks.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Replacement: brake caliper – Audi A3 8L1. Check the brake fluid level in the reservoir and top up if necessary.
Step 42
Tighten the brake fluid reservoir cap.
Step 43
Close the hood.
