How to change a front shock strut on HONDA ACCORD 8 (CU2) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – Shock Absorber for ACCORD VIII (CU) and other HONDA models
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. AUTODOC recommends:
Both shock struts of the front suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock struts of the front suspension.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Use the following procedure:
Step 1
Open the bonnet.
Step 2
Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 3
Clean the fasteners of the shock strut upper mount. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 4
Loosen the upper fastener of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 5
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 6
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 7
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 8
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Tip:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when unscrewing the bolts.
Step 9
Remove the wheel.
Step 10
Clean the shock strut fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 11
Unscrew the ABS cable holder. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 12
Unscrew the fastening bolt that connects the shock strut with the shock absorber fork. Use a drive socket #14. Use a tap wrench.
Step 13
Undo the fastener that connects the shock strut with the shock absorber fork.
Use a crowbar. Use a hammer.
Step 14
Pull aside the shock strut from its mounting seat.
Step 15
Clean the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork with the lower control arm.
Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 16
Unscrew the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork with the lower control arm.
Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a tap wrench.
Step 17
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 18
Detach the shock absorber fork from the shock strut. Use a flat metal-working chisel. Use a hammer.
Step 19
Unscrew the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Use a drive socket #14. Use a ratchet wrench.
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Hold the suspension strut while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Honda Accord VIII CU
Step 20
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 21
Disconnect the brake hose mounting bracket. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Remove the suspension strut.
Step 23
Set the shock absorber strut on the spring compressor tool.
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Note that when using a spring compressor, spring coils need to be securely gripped, compressing the spring on the opposite sides.Ensure the correct position of the spring in the retainer.Make sure that the spring coils tightly entered the lock handles.
Step 24
Compress the spring.
Step 25
Remove the strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #14. Use HEX No.H6. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 26
Remove the top strut mount. Use a crowbar.
Step 27
Release the coil spring.
Step 28
Remove the spring.
Step 29
Remove the old shock absorber from the hydraulic coil spring compressor.
Step 30
Remove the shock absorber dust cap and the bump stop.
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Tip from AUTODOC:
Τhoroughly examine the shock absorber mount, dust boot, bump stop. Replace them if necessary.Before installing a new shock absorber you should pump it manually 3-5 times.
Step 31
Install the new shock absorber on the hydraulic coil spring compressor.
Step 32
Install the dust sleeve and the bump stop on the new shock absorber.
Step 33
Install the spring on the shock absorber.
Step 34
Compress the spring.
Step 35
Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 36
Install the upper strut mount and the strut mount bearing.
Step 37
Tighten the shock strut piston rod nut. Use a combination spanner #17. Use HEX No.H6. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 29 Nm torque.
AUTODOC recommends:
Check to make sure the spring is positioned correctly. Avoid its misalignment.
Step 38
Decompress the spring.
Step 39
Remove the assembled shock strut.
Step 40
Install the shock strut into the wheel arch.
Step 41
Screw the top fastening of the shock strut mount. Do not tighten it.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Honda Accord VIII CU
Step 42
Remove the support from under the arm.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 43
Clean the mounting seats of the shock absorber fork. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 44
Attach the shock absorber fork to the shock strut.
Step 45
Install the fastening bolt. Use a rubber mallet.
Step 46
Support the arm. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 47
Tighten the fastening bolt that connects the shock strut with the shock absorber fork.
Use a drive socket #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 49 Nm torque.
Step 48
Tighten the fastening bolt that connects the shock absorber fork to the lower control arm.
Use a combination spanner #17. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 64 Nm torque.
Step 49
Secure the brake hose fastening bracket. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 50
Tighten the ABS cable holder. Use a drive socket #12. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 51
Remove the support from under the arm.
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Lower the hydraulic transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging assemblies and mechanisms.
Step 52
Treat the shock strut fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 53
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 54
Install the wheel.
Replacement: suspension strut – Honda Accord VIII CU. Tip from AUTODOC:
To avoid injury, hold up the wheel when screwing in the fastening bolts.
Step 55
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #19.
Step 56
Tighten the upper fastener of the shock absorber strut mount. Use a drive socket #14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 22 Nm torque.
Step 57
Treat the fasteners of the shock strut mount. Use copper grease.
Step 58
Lower the car and working in a cross order, tighten the wheel bolts. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 108 Nm torque.
Step 59
Remove the fender protection cover.
Step 60
Close the hood.
Step 61
Remove the jacks and chocks.
