Replace the oil filter every time when changing motor oil.
Wear gloves to prevent contact with hot liquid.
All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Recommended sequence of steps:
Step 1
Open the hood. Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car.
Step 2
Remove the engine cover caps. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 3
Unscrew the engine cover fastener. Use a drive socket #10.
Step 4
Remove the engine cover.
AUTODOC recommends:
Raise the engine cover, holding it on two sides simultaneously.
Step 5
Clean the oil filter housing cap. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 6
Unscrew the filter housing cap together with the old filter element. Use the 89-15F socket. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 7
Prepare a container for the old oil filter.
Step 8
Remove the filter element from the filter housing. Put the old filter cartridge in the container.
Step 9
Unscrew the oil filler plug.
Step 10
Lift the car using a jack or place it over an inspection pit.
Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC:
The vehicle must be on even keel, and if it is at an angle, the drain plug must be at the lowest point.All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Step 11
Undo the fasteners of the oil pan lower cover. Use a drive socket #10.
Step 12
Remove the oil pan cover.
Step 13
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole. Use a wire brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 14
Put a waste oil container with at least 4 l capacity under the drainage hole.
Step 15
Unscrew the drain plug. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 16
Drain the used oil.
Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Caution! The oil may be hot.Wait until the oil has completely drained from the drainage hole.
Step 17
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole.
Step 18
Screw in the new drainage plug and tighten it. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 30 Nm torque.
Step 19
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 20
Reinstall the oil pan lower cover.
Step 21
Tighten the fasteners of the oil pan lower cover. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Lower the car.
Step 23
Detach the oil filter from the filter cover.
Step 24
Remove old o-rings from the oil filter cover. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 25
Clean the oil filter housing cap. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 26
Install new O-rings (2 pieces) and a new oil filter to their mounting seats on the filter cover.
Please note!
Make sure to install the filter correctly. Don't mix up the sides of the part.
Step 27
Lubricate the rubber seal of the new filter with a little amount of fresh oil.
Step 28
Screw the new filter into its place.
Step 29
Install a new oil filter housing cover and tighten it. Use the 89-15F socket. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 25 Nm torque.
Step 30
Install the engine cover and secure it.
AUTODOC recommends:
Make sure the engine cover is properly seated. It should not be displaced with respect to the guiding fasteners.Caution! Do not use excessive force during installation. This may damage the fasteners of the car. VW Passat B5 Variant
Step 31
Screw in the engine cover fasteners. Use a drive socket #10.
Step 32
Install the engine cover caps.
Step 33
Remove the oil filler cap. Insert the funnel.
Step 34
Pour oil into the engine through the filler. Required amount of oil: 3.9 l.
Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Use the oil recommended by the manufacturer.
Step 35
Check the oil level using the dipstick. Top up oil if necessary.
Please note!
The oil level should be between the Min and Max marks.
Step 36
Install the oil filler cap. Tighten the oil filler cap.
Step 37
Run the engine for a few minutes. After the oil pressure warning light goes out, stop the engine.
Step 38
Check the oil level 5 minutes after the stop of the engine operation using a dipstick and add oil if necessary.
Please note!
The oil level should be between the Min and Max marks.Make sure that the oil filler cap is properly tightened.Check the threaded plug of the drainage hole and the oil filter seal for tightness. If necessary, carefully tighten them up.
Note that oil pressure warning light, which indicates insufficient pressure in the lubrication system, may be on for a longer time than usual. After a few seconds, the oil will fill all the channels, and the light will go out. To protect the environment from pollution, be sure to dispose of the used filters at special collection points.
