- Replace the oil filter every time when changing motor oil.
- Wear gloves to prevent contact with hot liquid.
- All work should be done with the engine stopped.
Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Recommended sequence of steps:
- Step 1
Open the hood. Use a fender protection cover to prevent damaging paintwork and plastic parts of the car. - Step 2
Remove the engine cover caps. Use a flat screwdriver. - Step 3
Unscrew the engine cover fastener. Use a drive socket #10. - Step 4
Remove the engine cover.AUTODOC recommends:Raise the engine cover, holding it on two sides simultaneously. - Step 5
Clean the oil filter housing cap. Use all-purpose cleaning spray. - Step 6
Unscrew the filter housing cap together with the old filter element. Use the 89-15F socket. Use a ratchet wrench. - Step 7
Prepare a container for the old oil filter. - Step 8
Remove the filter element from the filter housing. Put the old filter cartridge in the container. - Step 9
Unscrew the oil filler plug. - Step 10
Lift the car using a jack or place it over an inspection pit.Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC:The vehicle must be on even keel, and if it is at an angle, the drain plug must be at the lowest point.All work should be done with the engine stopped. - Step 11
Undo the fasteners of the oil pan lower cover. Use a drive socket #10. - Step 12
Remove the oil pan cover. - Step 13
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole. Use a wire brush. Use all-purpose cleaning spray. - Step 14
Put a waste oil container with at least 4 l capacity under the drainage hole. - Step 15
Unscrew the drain plug. Use a combination spanner #19. Use a ratchet wrench. - Step 16
Drain the used oil.Replacement: engine oil and filter – VW Passat B5 Variant. Tip from AUTODOC experts:Caution! The oil may be hot.Wait until the oil has completely drained from the drainage hole. - Step 17
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole. - Step 18
Screw in the new drainage plug and tighten it. Use a drive socket #19. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 30 Nm torque. - Step 19
Clean the area of the oil pan drainage hole. Use all-purpose cleaning spray. - Step 20
Reinstall the oil pan lower cover. - Step 21
Tighten the fasteners of the oil pan lower cover. Use a drive socket #10. Use a ratchet wrench. - Step 22
Lower the car. - Step 23
Detach the oil filter from the filter cover.
