Replacement: CV joint – AUDI 100 Avant (4A, C4). AUTODOC experts recommend:
- The CV joint replacement procedure is identical for the left and right CV axles.
- Replace the CV joints of CV axles in pairs.
- Please note: all work on the car – AUDI 100 Avant (4A, C4) – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.Step 2Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 3Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.Step 4Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. AUDI 100 Avant (4A, C4)
- Step 5Remove the wheel.
- Step 6Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use a drive socket #27. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 7Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
- Step 8Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 9Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
- Step 10Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.Replacement: CV joint – AUDI 100 Avant (4A, C4). Tip:Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
- Step 11Clean all joints of the arm. Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 12Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a drive socket #16. Use HEX No.H8. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 13Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 14Loosen the tie rod end fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #13. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 15Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch. Use a hammer.
- Step 16Loosen the tie rod end fastening bolt. Use a combination spanner #13.Step 17Remove the fastening bolt.Step 18Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 19Remove the control arms. Use a crowbar.
- Step 20Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
- Step 21Remove the fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #27.
- Step 22Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle.Replacement: CV joint – AUDI 100 Avant (4A, C4). Tip from AUTODOC experts:Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
- Step 23Clean the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 24Detach the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 25Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt. Use a drive socket #27. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 26Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub.
- Step 27Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 28Remove the CV joint together with its boot.
- Step 29Detach the CV joint boot.
- Step 30Clean the CV joint mounting seat. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 31Remove the CV joint circlip. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 32Install the CV joint boot on the CV axle. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 33Install the CV joint circlip.
- Step 34Pack the CV joint with the grease supplied in the kit.
- Step 35Install the new CV joint. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
- Step 36Move the inner race of the new CV joint from side to side to get it ready to work.
- Step 37Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
- Step 38Install the boot on the CV joint.
