The CV joint replacement procedure is identical for the left and right CV axles.
Replace the CV joints of CV axles in pairs.
Please note: all work on the car – Audi A6 C5 Avant – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts.Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 3
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 4
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A6 C5 Avant
Step 5
Remove the wheel.
Step 6
Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft.Use a drive socket #27.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 7
Spread the brake pads.Use a crowbar.
Step 8
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 9
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening.Use a drive socket #17.Use a ratchet wrench.Use a tap wrench.
Step 10
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A6 C5 Avant. Tip:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 11
Clean all joints of the arm.Clean the fastener connecting the tie rod end to the steering knuckle. Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 12
Unscrew the upper arm fastenings.Use a drive socket #16.Use HEX No.H8.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 14
Loosen the tie rod end fastening bolt.Use a drive socket #13.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 15
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a pin punch.Use a hammer.
Step 16
Loosen the tie rod end fastening bolt.Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 17
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 18
Prop up the steering knuckle.Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 19
Remove the control arms.Use a crowbar.
Step 20
Disconnect the tie rod end from the steering knuckle.
Step 21
Remove the fastening bolt. Use a drive socket #27.
Step 22
Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle.
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A6 C5 Avant. Tip from AUTODOC experts:
Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
Step 23
Clean the clamps of the CV joint boot.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 24
Detach the clamps of the CV joint boot.Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 25
Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt.Use a drive socket #27.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 26
Unscrew the fastener connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub.
Step 27
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 28
Remove the CV joint together with its boot.
Step 29
Detach the CV joint boot.
Step 30
Clean the CV joint mounting seat.Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 31
Remove the CV joint circlip.Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 32
Install the CV joint boot on the CV axle.Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 33
Install the CV joint circlip.
Step 34
Pack the CV joint with the grease supplied in the kit.
Step 35
Install the new CV joint.Use a bush and bearing driver set.Use a hammer.
Step 36
Move the inner race of the new CV joint from side to side to get it ready to work.
Step 37
Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint.Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 38
Install the boot on the CV joint.
Step 39
Attach the clamps of the CV joint boot.Use a flat screwdriver.Use clic-R collar pliers.Use a hammer.
Step 40
Install the drive shaft.
Step 41
Connect the tie rod end to the steering knuckle.
Step 42
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 43
Screw in the tie rod end fastening bolt.Use a combination spanner #13.
Step 44
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 45
Screw in the tie rod end fastening bolt.Use a drive socket #16.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 46
Clean the mounting seats and the thread of the suspension arm.Use a wire brush.Use WD-40 spray.
Step 47
Install the control arms.
Step 48
Install the fastening bolt.Use a crowbar.
Step 49
Screw in the fasteners of the upper control arms.Use a drive socket #16.Use HEX No.H8.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 50
Tighten the upper arm fastenings.Use a drive socket #16.Use HEX No.H8.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 73 Nm torque.
Step 51
Tighten the tie rod end fastening bolt.Use a drive socket #16.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 52 nm torque.
Step 52
Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt.Use a drive socket #27.Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 53
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Audi A6 C5 Avant – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
Step 54
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 55
Tighten the brake caliper bracket.Use a drive socket #17.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 75 Nm torque.
Step 56
Treat all joints of the arm.Treat the steering knuckle fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 57
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 58
Clean the brake disk surface.Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A6 C5 Avant. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 59
Install the wheel.

Important! Hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts. Audi A6 C5 Avant
Step 60
Screw in the wheel bolts.Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 61
Lower the car.
Step 62
Tighten the bolt connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub.Use a drive socket #27.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 175 Nm torque.
Step 63
Tighten the wheel bolts using a criss-cross pattern.Use wheel impact socket #17.Use a torque wrench.Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 64
Remove the jacks and chocks.
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A6 C5 Avant. Tip:
Without starting the engine, press the brake pedal several times until you feel significant resistance.
