How to change cv joint on AUDI A4 B5 Saloon [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]
All the parts you need to replace – CV Joint for A4 Saloon (8D2, B5) and other AUDI models
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip from AUTODOC:
The CV joint replacement procedure is identical for the left and right CV axles.
Replace the CV joints of CV axles in pairs.
Please note: all work on the car – Audi A4 B5 saloon – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
Step 1
Secure the wheels with chocks.
Step 2
Loosen the fastener of the driveshaft. Use HEX No.H14. Use a tap wrench.
Step 3
Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 4
Raise the front of the car and secure on supports.
Step 5
Unscrew the wheel bolts.
AUTODOC recommends:
Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 6
Remove the wheel.
Step 7
Spread the brake pads. Use a crowbar.
Step 8
Clean the brake caliper bracket fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 9
Unscrew the caliper bracket fastening. Use a drive socket #17. Use a ratchet wrench. Use a tap wrench.
Step 10
Remove the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A4 B5 saloon. AUTODOC recommends:
Tie the caliper to the suspension or to the body with a wire without disconnecting from the brake hose to prevent depressurization of the brake system.Make sure that the brake caliper is not hanging on the brake hose.Don't press the brake pedal after the brake caliper has been removed. As a result, the piston can fall out from the brake cylinder, and brake fluid leakage and depressurization of the system may occur.Check the brake caliper bracket, brake caliper guide pins and boots. Clean them. Replace, if necessary.
Step 11
Remove the brake disc.
Step 12
Remove the fastening bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 13
Prop up the steering knuckle. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
Step 14
Clean all joints of the arm. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 15
Unscrew the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 16
Remove the fastening bolt.
Step 17
Remove the control arms. Use a crowbar.
Step 18
Detach the driveshaft from the steering knuckle.
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Tip:
Make sure that the drive shaft is not unloaded (when the car is jacked).
Step 19
Clean the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
Step 20
Detach the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 21
Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 22
Remove the CV joint together with its boot.
Step 23
Remove the fastening bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 24
Clean the CV joint mounting seat. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 25
Remove the CV joint circlip. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 26
Clean the CV joint mounting seat. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 27
Pack the CV joint with the grease supplied in the kit.
Step 28
Move the inner race of the new CV joint from side to side to get it ready to work.
Step 29
Install the CV joint boot on the CV axle. Use a flat screwdriver.
Step 30
Install the CV joint circlip.
Step 31
Install the new CV joint. Use a bush and bearing driver set. Use a hammer.
Step 32
Move the inner race of the new CV joint from side to side to get it ready to work.
Step 33
Clean the splines of the drive shaft CV joint. Use all-purpose cleaning spray.
Step 34
Install the boot on the CV joint.
Step 35
Attach the clamps of the CV joint boot. Use a flat screwdriver. Use clic-R collar pliers. Use a hammer.
Step 36
Install the drive shaft.
Step 37
Install the control arms.
Step 38
Install the fastening bolt.
Step 39
Tighten the upper arm fastenings. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 40 Nm torque.
Step 40
Install and tighten the drive shaft bolt. Use HEX No.H14. Use a ratchet wrench.
Step 41
Clean the hub. Use a wire brush. Treat the contacting surface. Use copper grease.
Step 42
Remove the support from under the steering knuckle.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A4 B5 saloon. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
Step 43
Install the brake disc.
Step 44
Install the brake caliper together with its bracket.
Step 45
Tighten the brake caliper bracket. Use a drive socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 125 Nm torque.
Step 46
Treat all joints of the arm. Treat the steering knuckle fasteners. Use copper grease.
Step 47
Clean the wheel rim mounting seat. Use a wire brush.
Step 48
Treat the surface where the brake disc contacts the wheel rim. Use copper grease.
Step 49
Clean the brake disk surface. Use a brake cleaner.
AUTODOC recommends:
Replacement: CV joint – Audi A4 B5 saloon. After applying the spray, wait a few minutes.
Step 50
Install the wheel.

Warning! To avoid injury, hold the wheel while screwing in the fastening bolts on the car. Audi A4 B5 saloon
Step 51
Screw in the wheel bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
Step 52
Lower the car.
Step 53
Tighten the bolt connecting the drive shaft to the wheel hub. Use HEX No.H14. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 115 Nm torque.+180°
AUTODOC recommends:
Important! Be sure to use new fasteners.
Step 54
Tighten the wheel bolts using a criss-cross pattern. Use wheel impact socket #17. Use a torque wrench. Tighten it to 120 Nm torque.
Step 55
Remove the jacks and chocks.
