- The 2000 and 2200 models typically have a 4-speed manual gearbox, while the 3500 (especially the V8 P6B) has different transmission options.
- To fit the manual gearbox from the 2000 or 2200 onto a 3500 P6, you may need custom work, including fabrication to fit the transmission mounting points and modifications to the tailshaft length or a new tailshaft altogether.
- The bell housing can be compatible in some cases, but modifications might be required to accommodate the differences in clutch release mechanisms (such as the release arm position) and possibly the flywheel.
- Speedometer cable or electronic speed sensor connections may differ and will need attention.
- Cross-members and mounting points might need adaptation, and some welding or drilling could be necessary.
- Many enthusiasts who have done conversions mention the need to source or fabricate specific parts for a proper fit.
If you are up for it, consulting detailed Rover P6 forums or classic Rover clubs could provide you with tailor-made advice and possibly templates, as this kind of swap is popular among Rover enthusiasts who want a manual gearbox in a 3500.
Yes, with some work it can be done, but don’t expect a plug-and-play scenario. Be ready for some custom fitting, machining, and patience—or you might be making a very expensive paperweight! ⚙️🔧🚗
