How to change gas struts / tailgate struts on VW GOLF 4 (1J1) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Hydraulic transmission jack
Replacement: tailgate struts – VW Golf 4. AUTODOC experts recommend:
- Right and left gas struts of the boot lid should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the right and left gas struts of the boot lid.
- Please note: all work on the car – VW Golf 4 – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Open the boot lid.
- Step 2Support the boot lid. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 3Detach the rear parcel shelf straps.
- Step 4Release the circlip connecting the gas strut to the boot lid. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 5Release the circlip connecting the gas strut to the car body. Use a flat screwdriver.Replacement: tailgate struts – VW Golf 4. Tip:To avoid any injuries, be sure to hold the boot lid while demounting the gas struts.
- Step 6Remove the boot lid gas strut.
- Step 7Release the circlip connecting the gas strut to the boot lid. Use a flat screwdriver.
- Step 8Release the circlip connecting the gas strut to the car body. Use a flat screwdriver.Replacement: tailgate struts – VW Golf 4. AUTODOC experts recommend:To avoid any injuries, be sure to hold the boot lid while demounting the gas struts.
- Step 9Remove the boot lid gas strut.
- Step 10Treat the fasteners of the boot lid gas strut. Use a multipurpose grease. Use a flat screwdriver.
