How to change rear springs / rear coil springs on VW PASSAT 5 (B5) [TUTORIAL AUTODOC]

Replacement: coil springs – VW Passat B5 Variant. AUTODOC recommends:
- Both shock absorbers of the rear suspension should be replaced simultaneously.
- The replacement procedure is identical for the left and right shock absorbers of the rear suspension.
- Please note: all work on the car – VW Passat B5 Variant – should be done with the engine switched off.
Carry out replacement in the following order:
- Step 1Secure the wheels with chocks.
- Step 2Loosen the wheel mounting bolts. Use wheel impact socket #17.
- Step 3Raise the rear of the car and secure on supports.
- Step 4Unscrew the wheel bolts.AUTODOC recommends:Important! Hold the wheel while unscrewing the fastening bolts. VW Passat B5 Variant
- Step 5Remove the wheel.
- Step 6Clean the shock absorber fasteners. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 7Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 8Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.
- Step 9Remove the fastening bolt.
- Step 10Remove the mounting from under the rear axle beam.AUTODOC recommends:Replacement: coil springs – VW Passat B5 Variant. Lower the transmission jack smoothly, without jerks, to avoid damaging components and mechanisms.
- Step 11Support the rear suspension beam. Use a hydraulic transmission jack.
- Step 12Unscrew the lower fastener of the shock absorber. Use a combination spanner #16. Use a drive socket #16. Use a ratchet wrench.Step 13Remove the fastening bolt.Step 14Remove the mounting from under the rear axle beam.AUTODOC recommends:VW Passat B5 Variant – Do not lower the transmission jack sharply to avoid damaging components and mechanisms of the car.
- Step 15Take out the spring.
- Step 16Clean the coil spring mounting seats. Use a wire brush. Use WD-40 spray.
- Step 17Install the coil spring together with the rubber mounts into the mounting seats.
